to use the free version Paragon backup & restore

1. Run the program & click on 'backup disk or partition' top left
2. The 'backup wizard' should run - click 'next'
3. On the 'what to backup' screen click the the box next to 'basic hard disk 0', click 'next'.
4. Choose 'save data to local/network drives', click 'next'.
5. Choose the external disk as the backup destination. Click 'next'.
6. Choose 'backup now'. Click 'next' & the backup should begin.

Take the option to 'build recovery media' from the tools menu - this will burn a CD you can boot from in the event of, for example, your main disk getting a virus, which you can then use to restore a 'clean' backup from the external disk.

you can save to disk, but an external hard drive is much more convenient - bear in mind a DVD is 5GB & you are looking to backup 250 GB - that would be 50 DVD disks ...

a simple option (not the best, necessarily, but bear with me) would be go to Tesco, & buy a http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.206-4435.aspx

Use this to save the backup to - at worst Tesco will take it back & refund the cost no questions asked if returned within 30 days ...

NB 'Hard Drive' & 'Hard Disk' tend to be synonymous ...

I thought you said you had borrowed an external hard disk/drive to try?

Re: External Hardrive

Looking at the instructions that Gazfan posted I think line 5 is the key here.

Have a look at that again Roy, your external disk should show up in a display and you can select it as the destination for the backup.

Roy, try not to get overwhelmed by the technological details. Just stop for a moment and think about what you are trying to achieve here.

Now go back and read gazfan's instructions again. In fact it would probably be a good idea to read them 2 or 3 times and try to imagine what each step is doing.

Once you take the time to think it through it's honestly not complicated. Make a cuppa, read the details and take your time..

Re: External Hardrive

>>Hijacks thread! :-)

Zing: IYO - best e-SATA drive at the moment? I need to do what roystheboy is doing but I'm a bit paraniod - all my photos are on my local HDD, and sync to my NAS (Raid2 Mirriored) but I also want a copy offsite. Suppose you are going to say - just buy an e-SATA caddy and whatever drive takes your fancy - uh? :-)

Sorry roystheboy - please continue - how's it going?

Re: External Hardrive

Hey Roy i downloaded Paragon Free today to give it a whirl. As mentioned the first thing is to create a recovery CD. I knocked up a bit of a guide/walk through while evaluating the program, maybe it`ll help.

So first off you wan`t to click on "Recovery Media Builder", then Next

Then choose Flash Memory (e.g. USB stick) or CD/DVD, then Next.

Now the top entry should be pre-selected "Typical", make sure it is and click next.

Next you need to choose your CD/DVD burner from the list and highlight it, then Next again.

Choose the burning speed and Next again, insert a CD the program should burn the recovery media to CD. Label it and put it somewhere safe (preferably in a case of some sort)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now for doing a back up select the entry "Back up Disc or Partition"

Next and then you will get the screen showing current discs, etc. Tick the box of the disc you wish to back up, normally disc 0 but as you can see in the picture i`m backing Disc 1 to Disc 0. Just click the top box next to Basic Hard Disc and the others automatically get ticked. Next

Now you will be asked where to save the back up. The box "Save data to Local/Network drive" should be ticked, this will be your external hard drive.

You will now be asked on which partition do you wan`t to save the archive, highlight your external hard drive and check the info below is correct. Click Next.

Now select Back up Now, click Next and you should get a summary page, just check the info is correct.

You should now return to the main screen where you should get a message about Applying the unsaved changes. Hit the Apply button and the back up should start. It will take a while depending on amount being done.

Good luck, i`ll do a restore one soon if you wan`t

p.s. Some things you may wish to do before the back up is to remove/delete stuff from your Download folder (program installers, etc) and to also run CCleaner. You could also delete Restore points via CCleaner as well if you wish.
