setting up usenet with unison on mac

Hi, i have virginmedia 50meg as my isp.

I have a mac and have just bought unison.

I tried using sabnzb it was easy to set up and i was downloading files via nzbmatrix but alot would not complete. So i was advised to try unison.

Trouble is im find it hard to set up. in the servers section i have put news.virginmedia.com and also added my virgin user name and password. Trouble is it wont let me connect.

Do i need to subscribe to a newsgroup provider like astraweb or giganews etc?
If so which one is reccomended?

What i cant understand is if i can use sabnzb for free and download via nzbmatrix for a one off fee (but not being very reliable), why do i need to subscrible to a newsgroup provider.

I would like to point out im wanting to download files.

Louis

I have exactly the same setup as you, Unison running on an iMac (20Mb/s rather than 50 though). The important thing is that you don't need to put in a username and password. The news server address is right but you can only use it from a VM ip address, which you can only have if you are a VM customer and hence needing a username and password would be superfluous.

Try removing them and see if that works.

Re: setting up usenet with unison on mac

I would recommend the service the makers of Unison, Panic, provide. It makes it trivially easy to set up in this case as all the ports and addresses will be pre configured and hence it only needs a user name and password. It's Unlimited and quite cheap at $9 a month:

https://www.panic.com/unison/access.html

If you downloading files I would recommend a proper, paid, service as I believe the Virgin media ones have poor retention (period they keep files for) and download limits.

Happy to use unison access but i would like to set up usenet on other pcs in my house so i can access from anywhere in my house. There windows based so wont be able to use unison.

If i subscribe to astraweb unlimited can i use the one subscribtion for all pcs in my house or do i need to pay for each machine?

You'll be able to use the same account and have it across all computers. Even the Unison account.
