Oh why would I do, it would take all the fun out of poking microsoft lack of user input within it's software (browser + O/S)... oh yes plus I'd never would delete something that I post - its way too easy to be done - for to your answer from your wondering reply
To say that I've had a win 98/xp/windows 7 (was vista) O/S systems running plus was long ago a IE user now since firefox came out, then oprea + thunderbird.. I've moved on to better places within. So you can say that I have first hand saw a few lack luster ideas/thing/items within microsoft products - not forgetting the otherthings like office etc .....

Blackcomb was originally going to be XPs successor this was meant to have WINFS and various other new features. Longhorn was originally going to be an interim build similar to what ME was to Win98 however the development took on some of Blackcombs features and dropped some others .Longhorn was delayed due to problems with XP security in favour of service pack development and later released as Vista. Development restarted on Blackcomb under the new name of Vienna and later Windows 7 which we see today.
I see Windows 7 as an optimised Vista with the major difference being how it deals with ram and other system resources

I intended to come across as being slightly tongue in cheek and obviously haven't done a very good job of it. Windows 7 is a very good OS, but it's what Vista should (and could) have been. I know that Win7 is more than Vista SP3 ... but it still grates on me a bit, hence the comment. It remains to be seen how different the kernels really are - I shall make up my mind when Mark Russinovich finishes Windows Internals 6th Edition.
Not sure I agree about service packs usually being bug-fix roll ups only. A quick scan over some of the feature lists for the three XP service packs and two Vista service packs suggests that the only SP that didn't contain much in the way of new features was XP SP3. All the others had a fair few additional features IIRC...

My feelings exactly. Except Vista has improved dramatically in these areas as well so, whilst I want Win7, I really can't justify the cost for the benefits it would bring.

Actually, MS used to do it quite often until NT 4.0 SP2 was released. The reason they stopped is that they weren't testing the service packs as thoroughly as they did full OS releases, and NT 4.0 SP2 destroyed a lot of NT installs.

I stand corrected. I only became used to Service pack installs with Windows 2000 - which were only mostly rollups

re: IE 9 Beta (merged)
Zee - that's an interesting browser comparison chart you have there. Although I prefer Mozilla Firefox for the extensions, I do agree that Chrome and Opera are faster on Windows 7. It's also interesting that IE9 is going to be out so soon after IE8. Talking of IE in general, I only really liked IE4 and IE5.5 back in 99/00, then I was a Mozilla kid from 2002 onwards.
