That`s generally the type of error you get when you have two different programs trying to use apt at the same time. You dont have Synaptic or something else that uses apt open at the same time do you?

Failing that you could try removing the lock file, as long as you know there`s nothing using apt at the time of course...
Code:
sudo rm /var/cache/apt/archives/lock

That`s the best attitude to try with.
Just trying Linux out should be bit of fun at the end of the day and as long as your not messing around with any mission critical machines then you cant do any real harm....unless you end up lobbing the machine out the windows rather than just sticking with Windows, if or when it all gets too much.
If you are messing about on important machines though, like some often do, then you may need to rethink your position.........in the company. ;-)

See above.....
You cant do any real harm, besides, the more problems and errors you get the more you`ll learn along the way....or the quicker you`ll be back to Windows.

Are you sure your Internet is connected and working before your trying to download stuff. Can you browse, Ping Google etc. It just seems strange you having similar connectivity issues on different(albeit the same) systems.

I think i will end up going back to windows! lol.

I pinged google using the network tools and it was successful, when the OS starts a little box comes up from the tool bar saying connection established.

The only problem is browing websites with flash, and downloading updates and software from the software manager.

Nobody would need to "go back" to Windows if they never left(deleted) Windows in the first place. It would actually be quite mad not to keep Windows in a situation where that`s all you`d used that for years & years.
Not saying that`s what you`ve done of course(tell me it`s not.. :-)) but some crazy folks do decide to try Linux then go right ahead and completely wipe that Windows partition, without any clear cut way of re-installing it if & when things go wrong.

Can you try updating/upgrading in the terminal, just to see any(more) errors that are spat back.

Re: Trouble with Ubuntu

Hi xpod, i`ve just recently installed Ubuntu on an old computer which i had lying around and there seemed to be a few graphics problems. The graphics card is a very old S3 Virge DX (pci slot, not AGP) and it seems like there is a problem with the refresh rate which is making the screen flicker like mad whenever i move the mouse or do anything.
Also when you first have to put your password in the screen is barely readable but once in i can change the rate to 60Hz and at least it`s readable.

Any pointers on the best way to go? I to would like have some fun

Sorry for Jumping in on this thread Mods if you feel a new thread is required just say so.

Matty

p.s. I`m just gonna hook it up so be back in a tick

Exactly how old is this old machine Matty? What are the rest of the specs? Full blown Ubuntu with the Gnome Desktop Environment is not really the best choice for those really old machines.

Old, old, Celeron 1.3 Ghz, 384MB Ram,40meg HD, old graphics card.

It`s strange that when i boot from live CD all seems fine, allthough i think you maybe right, might give Mint or PClinux a bash.

Everything else seems fine just this screen flicker problem, if i set it to a lower resolution it does work better but then i lose half the screen

I`ve tried to locate a driver and install but it says no proprietary installed.

XP worked fine on it but i suppose that`s because most stuff is designed for Microsoft

Re: Trouble with Ubuntu

mu PII 450 struggles with any Ubuntu or variant of it. I may try lubutnu at the weekend, but Ubuntu does have lots of bloat other than WM/DE, even Flux Mint was bad on that PC.

sidux was pretty good, based on unstable debian on that PC using XFCE which was bad on Ubuntu on same PC.

I'd suggest distros using LXDE, i find that has a good compromise of speed, looks and functionality.

I've tried loads of Linuxes on that PC and for speed and ease of use I always end up going back to XP

distros like Puppy fly on it though.

If you were to go purely on the recommended minimum requirements then you actually have more than enough but personally i would still go with something a little lighter.

You wont find any propriety driver in the Hardware Drivers Manager but the driver should already be installed.

Like admars has suggested though possibly something using lxde or similar would be far better. Mint & PCLinuxOS are probably as heavy as Ubuntu, if not more so.
I`m still using the Lubuntu-desktop package atop the mini-iso on my own old laptop.......although not quite as old as those mentioned with 1.73Ghz & 512MB...and although i was only having a wee look at the time i`ve just never got back round to changing it back. In fact i cant even remember exactly what pic n mix i had on there before.

Re: Trouble with Ubuntu

It`s an issue with that particular card that seems to be causing it, that seems the consensus after a lot of googleing and reading posts. Shame the mother board only has PCI slots as i`ve got spare AGP cards. Still this might just give the excuse i`ve been waiting for to upgrade my own mother board/GFX

I`m not one of these that want`s the latest and greatest, i think most of it just marketing blah blah and doesn`t make much difference (if your not a pc gamer)

Cheers for the info, i`ll take a look at LXDE, certainly liked what i saw compared to when i last tried it several years ago, seems more polished/finished!
