New reports have emerged suggesting that Apple will launch a budget version of the iPad 2 next week, and put a small screen tablet into production later this year, as it seeks to see off the challenge of cheap Android tablets.

Apple has confirmed that it will hold a press event next Wednesday, at which at least one new iPad will be announced, with widespread speculation that it will be the iPad 3.

However, fresh reports suggest that the event will also herald a more affordable 8GB model of the iPad 2 that was released last year.

According to Digitimes, the new product would be priced at $349 to $399 (£219 to £250), and Apple will also lower the price of the 16GB iPad 2 to $449 (£281). This is presumably for the WiFi version, not 3G.

The industry blog also claimed that a source said the iPad Mini - a new smaller screen tablet - will go into production in the third quarter of 2012.

Digitimes believes that the iPad Mini will be a direct rival to the various budget Google Android tablets, particularly the Amazon Kindle Fire

So what are your thoughts on the new iPad and what do you think to its new name? I dont own an iPad and never have just an iPhone and i like the specs but no Siri on it

What's it called? Not worth an upgrade from an iPad 2. Personally never used the camera should have kept my ipad1

I saw that but thought surely not! Lol "the new iPad".

I've had the iPad 1 and 2 but won't be upgrading, the screen looks like its much better, e ipad2 is annoying priced so that you think "for a little more I can get the iPad 3 (the new iPad)

Its a funny name. It doesnt make sense that the iPad to is only $100 less than the new iPad

So when the Ipad 4 comes out is this going to be "The old new iPad"

Neither can have memory added, or connect to a tv, thats why I bought the ASUS Transformer Tf101 (ICS), and I don't need iTunes on my laptops.

I have bought a 32GB card to use for Video/music.

From dicssuions ive been having with mates all new models will be called "The New iPad" so this way they get the option to delay launch of the next one without the expectation of a new one, and stop people holding off for the next one

I connect my iPad to our TV, using an Apple connector.

I use my tv for tv and my iPad for ipadding
