Ending a Program forcefully

How is it possible other than using Task Manager to get a program to end forcefully?

Im having a problem with Firefox at the moment now and then when i try and open it, it says the program is already running and i cant get it to end by killing the process in task manager and the only way i can then get it to work is by restarting the PC.

Are there any other programs i can try?

Rather than killing the application in Task Mangler have you tried killing the process?

If the process has got in such a look that it's unstoppable by either killing the application or process then I'm afraid a reboot is the only way to go.. But having said that you might find that it's another application or process that's crashing it and by killing this 3rd party process it'll drop down the original.. As to fnding out which 3rd party process well that comes from either experience or plain dumb luck

You may be able to pick up more info from Mark Russinovich's Process Explorer tool.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb896653.aspx

"Ever wondered which program has a particular file or directory open? Now you can find out. Process Explorer shows you information about which handles and DLLs processes have opened or loaded."

Re: Ending a Program forcefully

I use Merijn Itty Bitty Process Manager (they're the ones who did Hijackthis) but it won;t tell you if aanother process is holding up the crash if it's not related

Re: Ending a Program forcefully

it was the new version of Zone Alarm causing it, it was also causing the connection to become blocked even though the browsers were all set to allow connection.

I think theres still some bugs to be worked out on there.

Sometimes that happens to me also.....

Example: When im listening to a clip with realplayer (A clip it DL from the net) and i clear temp files,USUALLY RP WILL CRASH DUE TO THE FILE BEING GONE IT WAS PLAYING..

Now if i OPEN TASK MANAGER and "END TASK" When this happens, its fine.... BUT IF I JUST CLOSE IT ON THE ERROR MESSAGE,I CANT DO ANYTHING (Have to reboot,ITS STUCK IN LIMBO)

Very confusing......
