I've just been researching laptop for my daughter and found that Dell's deal of the week offered best overall package. Checked ebuyer, dabs, aria etc.
Dell's offer expires 8th july
Arghh, HP In any case that shows as out of stock, and a monitor would be extra.
Most of the big mass producers of computers can often use non standard components. They work well, but aren't easily replaced or upgraded. Also many of the manufacturer's don't supply the software but instead use restore discs which can make it difficult to adapt the PC to your specific liking. On the other hand it should work well out of the box.
If the computer's main use is likely to be gaming, then consider checking out your local computer shop. They may well be able to build you something from standard components that will outperform the big high street store offerings. You'll be looking for good graphics, a decent CPU and ideally for Vista 4 GB of RAM. You can always add more hard disc space later, so you could compromise a little on cost there, but hard discs these days are quite cheap.
Look for a 64bit version of Vista rather than 32. 64 should make better use of the modern CPU if you have enough RAM, and would be a tad more future proofed.
Thanks, Rob.
I'm taking a note of that information. It'll be a very useful guide. Helps to have some idea what you are looking for before the sales people go into their speal as too much information can be confusing. Thanks again.
Thanks everyone.

Just been having a read of this.
Should you wait for Windows 7 before buying a new PC?

Hi! I took a look. I'm not sure what a Media Centre PC is and how it differs from a desktop but he seems to have his heart set on the one above that we found on the net earlier.
A media centre is a PC in a different case. Mine has blu ray reader/dvd rw combi smaller hard drive but you can add another or ask me to a much much better PSU better GFX that one has 1 extra core and 1 gig more ram and mines 100 less lol lol . I can sell it with 3 months Vista free ready for a win 7 update
If you buy a PC now, check whether it comes with an upgrade option for Windows 7. If you do want windows 7 then make sure you have followed the advice for vista 64 bit specs. However, whether or not to upgrade to windows 7 will be an entirely different thread It shouldn't stop you buying a PC now.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Thank you. It'll be another week before we can go get it so no doubt he'll continue looking on the net and in the end take whatever we can afford.
