re: [MERGED] The Windows 7 Thread

I'm thinking of installing it now. I just need to show someone a document to confirm to me if it'll work with the university wireless.

---------- Post added at 11:45 ---------- Previous post was at 10:19 ----------

Question.

Would I be able to use a virtual drive to install this?

And if I PM'd someone a document, would you tell me if it's likely to work or not on my university wireless network?

No problems installing it at all, there were a couple of things in device manager which were sorted by new drivers.

re: [MERGED] The Windows 7 Thread

Got Windows 7 up and running here on my MacBook after a couple of minor issues*

All in all it seems pretty good so far, although I haven't really done much yet. I like the new taskbar, much cleaner and the thumbnail preview is nice.

The new WordPad and Paint are nice. They use the Office 2007 ribbon control which works well.

* Minor issues:

I was unable to install the x64 version as the Windows 7 installer (and the Vista x64 installer) doesn't like Apple's EFI implementation. There's apparently a workaround that involves creating a new install disc that boots via BIOS instead of EFI but I couldn't be bothered and installed the x86 version instead.

Although the system insisted that the MacBook's audio was working fine there was no sound output. I had to manuall run the installer on the Leopard DVD using the "troubleshoot compatibility" option to tell the system that the driver works fine under Vista. Sound is now working fine.

re: [MERGED] The Windows 7 Thread

I installed it. So far, I am generally happy with it (it does seem a lot more responsive than Vista, even playing HL2 EP 2).

I did an upgrade over Vista. Both OSes are 64 bit

I also had to allow Windows Update to upgrade the display driver to play blu rays.

Downsides:

I use AnyDVD to allow Blurays to play on my monitor (which does not do HDCP). The driver is not signed, so Windows disabled it, and both my BD drive and DVD writer. I can get them running, but I need to disable driver signing.

When I upgraded Vista, I had to leave the PC for a long time. When I got back, I found my PC locked, and neither the keyboard nor mouse would respond. Worked fine after a reset though (even the push the power button to shut down didn't work).

I got a blue screen after the system finished installing It reverted itself back...

re: [MERGED] The Windows 7 Thread

Ugh, you used the upgrade function?! Personally, i wouldn't touch that at all. They should remove that option completely as it doesn't result in a totally clean and problem free OS.

re: [MERGED] The Windows 7 Thread

Have installed Windows 7 twice now, both Virtual Machines one running on Virtual PC with only 512MB and the other running on VMWare Server with 1GB.

Cant seem to install the Virtual Machine Additions, though the tools install on VMWare server.

Having problems getting the Bridged network to work on VMWare Server also.

Still think I prefer XP at the moment though, seems to be quicker for me.

re: [MERGED] The Windows 7 Thread

I ended up going in the loft and bringing down my old Toshiba T9000, it installed ok.
I only want to get a feel for it, not use it as such. Seems to be running ok at the moment..

What version of VirtualPC are you using? Be specific and give us the full build number - there are issues running on some builds of VPC...
