re: [MERGED] The Windows 7 Thread

is it still available under the old os?

This has ended up as a support thread and has not been stuck anyway so I guess we can forget about it being a compat thread

Keys shouldn't be a problem. There aren't 2.5m individual keys. Theres a limited number of them but the same keys are being given to everyone so no one has their own "personal" key.

re: [MERGED] The Windows 7 Thread

We have W7 running dual boot to XP home - and so far, so good.. thankfully, the audio/mp3 issue we have with W7 means that we'll just have to make sure we're in XP mode first...
Bar from that, it's running sweetly, its behaving and there have been several 'Ooo.. lookit daaaaat!' moments.. especially the minimised windows thing... where, if you hover your mouse over the preview pane, you can expand it from there rather than expanding it manually (Vista.. great preview pane, lacking in function - W7 addresses that )
Plus there are other neat functions too - too many to list, but it's fun finding them out

I'm SO tempted to see if my ultra-old PC would even look at the W7 distro - just out of bloody-minded curiosity...

The alternative route would've been installing bootcamp on the macbook and seeing if that could handle it just as well...

Either way, for me - it's just like handling a souped up and tweaked Vista - they've sure as heck made it quick to load - I won't argue there!!

But it looks pretty, and I've read reports that some people have been able to run W7 on computers with 1Ghz processors...but don't quote me (or them) on that!
For those of you with a computer thats 2 - 4 years old, I'd say its probably worth a shot if you think your computer is up to it...

I do believe that M$ will be putting a version of W7 on some laptops towards the end of this year too...

It's all looking good here...

Until the next Beta release

re: [MERGED] The Windows 7 Thread

If you look at the minimum specs that Microsoft has posted then people shouldn't have problems atleast getting the OS to run on such old hardware.

re: [MERGED] The Windows 7 Thread

To get this thread back on topic I actually managed to get Slysofts VirtualCloneDrive to work. Had to run the installer in vista compat mode then had to run the program and the prefs in Vista compat mode. The program froze not the system when I selected 2 drives unlocked itself after a while and allowed a reboot (actually hungapptimeout was ages but it did timeout eventually) System restarted with 1 working clonedrive so result

Is there any chance a passing mod( if there are any venture here ) move the key request and download to the other windows 7 thread so this can get back to compat .

Virtual Clone Drive worked no problem for me at all. I didn't even have to use any compatibility options to run it or install it.

re: [MERGED] The Windows 7 Thread

I believe it lasts until the next release is distributed, since Microsoft can control how long the install remains active, atleast during the BETA stage. I think they'll just activate a 30-day timer so people don't lose an data.

My system does not like it. With the driver installed the system will not shut down.

re: [MERGED] The Windows 7 Thread

Up and running on my Toshiba laptop, seems much smoother and faster than Vista was (with Aero running I couldn't watch a video without the screen blanking all the time).
It found the network straight away and AVG free is happy running on it. So far so good.

They've removed the 2.5 million download limit:

From The Windows 7 Blog:

"Due to an enormous surge in demand, the download experience was not ideal so we listened and took the necessary steps to ensure a good experience. We have clearly heard that many of you want to check out the Windows 7 Beta and, as a result, we have decided remove the initial 2.5 million limit on the public beta for the next two weeks (thru January 24th). During that time you will have access to the beta even if the download number exceeds the 2.5 million unit limit."
