VNC questions

Hello all, basically I have been using VNC for a few years now as it comes in very handy for remote administering my HTPC which doubles up as my torrent server.
Now what I would like to do specifically is log into the HTPC purely for the purpose of file copying and torrent management, all this must be done without disturbing any playback on the HTPC side of things. The machine is up to the task spec wise but I cant seem to find a method of doing this. Obviously some things I will want to do will hog so much of the system resources playback wont be possible while I am doing them, however, as long as anyone viewing a film etc on the HTPC cant see what I am doing then that is acceptable.
My current VNC takes control of the machine just like it should but obviously this means stopping playback etc If I want to add a new torrent or manage my file locations. And last time I tried the windows remote desktop it locked the host machine and rendered it unusable while the remote session was running.

The HTPC is running Windows XP MCE with media portal and Real VNC.
All other machines are running Vista (Various flavours) and Real VNC.

Not sure if I have made it clear what im looking for there but if anybody has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Re: VNC questions

If you use utorrent, it has a remote web control interface thingy, so you can control it through that. As for copying files, can't you just use Windows file sharing?

I never thought of the remote web interface for utorrent, thanks I will look into that.
As for the file sharing, that works fine when I am moving files accross one share but If I make a copy on the same share or move/copy files to a different share or even to my NAS everything takes a hell of a lot longer than it would If I could do it locally.

Interestingly I may have already stumbled upon a solution, If I set up multiple monitors my current VNC will display them both when I log in.
Only problem is my current graphics card only has one port so it doesnt even have the option of setting up a second monitor, plus I would have to force the detection of the display if it did as I dont have a second monitor I can leave connected.
Are there any programs out there than can create a virtual second monitor?

So in short another solution and another problem in just over 10 mins after posting

Re: VNC questions

If you want to move between two shares and don't want to worry about adding another virtual monitor then I would set up FTP daemons on both machines then using FXPing software (like FlashFXP, one of the few apps i've bought as its worth the money) to transfer between them. FXPing is like FTPing but between remote sites. What I think takes long on yours is that its transferring the files to your local machine and then onto the other share, taking twice as long. FTP makes the remote sites connect to each other so the data doesn't get routed locally. Your NAS probably already runs one.
