Filename tools
Hi everyone,
I've got a load of files on a XP system that I'm trying to FTP over to a linux server, but partially trough the files it keeps freezing the transfer which I gather is because of some of the characters within these file names..
Does anyone know of a free tool that'll autorename files so that it'll remove the weird characters..

Re: Filename tools
I should also add that there's about a thousand directories and approx twenty thousand files, hence I asked for a tool...

Re: Filename tools
highlight all the files you want to rename, then right click and select rename. Type a name in and XP with renumber for you from there.

Re: Filename tools
Bulk Rename Utility can do all sorts of renaming tasks, it looks complicated but it's easy to use, I've used it a few times, might be worth a look Kymmy.

Re: Filename tools
seriously, XP has a bulk renamer built in.... no need to DL stuff... just highlight them all and rename the first one, XP will then rename the rest with numerical addition.

Re: Filename tools
Thanks Jo....
All the rest suggesting use the inbuilt tools it's not much good when you're just trying to remove some non-standard alphanumerics and leaving the original name intact

What non-standard alphanumerics are they? If there are only a few, you can write a script/regexp to rename them.

Re: Filename tools
Kymmy I would seriously suggest you look at downloading VB Express (or C# Express if you are a C/Java person) for stuff like this. You could have knocked up a program to do this for you recursively in about 15 lines of code (if that).
