Filename tools
Hi everyone,
I've got a load of files on a XP system that I'm trying to FTP over to a linux server, but partially trough the files it keeps freezing the transfer which I gather is because of some of the characters within these file names..
Does anyone know of a free tool that'll autorename files so that it'll remove the weird characters..

in the run box type CMD
Then in the DOS box type REN/?
this will give you options

I should also add that there's about a thousand directories and approx twenty thousand files, hence I asked for a tool...

highlight all the files you want to rename, then right click and select rename. Type a name in and XP with renumber for you from there.

Bulk Rename Utility can do all sorts of renaming tasks, it looks complicated but it's easy to use, I've used it a few times, might be worth a look Kymmy.

seriously, XP has a bulk renamer built in.... no need to DL stuff... just highlight them all and rename the first one, XP will then rename the rest with numerical addition.

Thanks Jo....
All the rest suggesting use the inbuilt tools it's not much good when you're just trying to remove some non-standard alphanumerics and leaving the original name intact

What non-standard alphanumerics are they? If there are only a few, you can write a script/regexp to rename them.

Just didn;t have the time to do that Punky but yes good suggestion...
In the end I used Jo's suggestion and also found PFrank which worked well..

Kymmy I would seriously suggest you look at downloading VB Express (or C# Express if you are a C/Java person) for stuff like this. You could have knocked up a program to do this for you recursively in about 15 lines of code (if that).
