XP machine won't hold time
or allow itself to synchronise automatically or by trying to force an update through the system tray.
Can't see it being a CMOS battery issue as all the other settings hold ok.
When I try to synchronise, it says an unexpected network error has occurred.
Any ideas?
Thanks very much.

Re: XP machine won't hold time
go to the internet time tab and in the server box enter
europe.pool.ntp.org
and click apply.
Then click update now and it should work.

Re: XP machine won't hold time
Try a different time server.

Re: XP machine won't hold time
Something weird is going on -- I've just tried four different time servers and can't update with any of them. Even VM's recommended server (ntp.blueyonder.co.uk) won't connect.
Try again tomorrow?

time update needs UDP port 123 IIRC. Any chance that's being blocked by a firewall?

Re: XP machine won't hold time
The windows firewall blocks this action by default (quite stupid if you ask me). As said above you need to open certain ports on the firewall to allow it to work.

Re: XP machine won't hold time
I agree with alf.time.windows.
However even if you do manage to sync the time and every time you reboot time has changed. This indeed proberly means BIOS battery needs a replacement.
These batteries should be changed approx every 2 years although damage can be caused to them sooner sometimes, via power outage or bad shut downs.
You either need to take battery to a good electrical store or write down the number and letter code as these batteries come in diffrent thickness and you need the correct one.
I know I buy myne in UK £2 each not from a computer store but a good electrical store.

Re: XP machine won't hold time
The CMOS batteries are just a standard CR2032 button cell battery. There all the same.

Re: XP machine won't hold time
Was going to say, the BIOS battery is nothing special, you can buy them in Tescos! But as the OP says, the other BIOS settings are not reset, which you would expect if the BIOS battery was dead, and you'd normally get an 'F1 to continue' error.
Is the machine actually losing time (i.e you set it to the correct time but after 30 minutes it isn't showing the time as 30 minutes later?), this usually indicates a problem with the clock generator on the motherboard. If if just goes back or forward a few hours after a restart then check the Regional and Lanuage settings in the control panel to ensure the right time zone is set.
Otherwise, check you OS firewall as mentioned and your router if you have one and make sure UDP port 123 is open.

It's my girlfriend's son's machine so I'll have to check.
I think it needs a reinstall though as someting seems broken in the security centre.
Cheers.

The time holds if I manually set it but reverts to completely the wrong time the following day.
I can't get into the firewall at the moment, the security centre seems broken.
Cheers.
