Hello all,

Some kind person has given me an ipod so i can get the songs off it and back them up.

Seems the owner of the ipod had all the music stored on a pc that blew up and now only has them on the ipod.

As i have never seen one and started to cry when i couldnt browse the songs using explorer could anyone tell me how i get the songs off the ipod onto my vista machine so i can back them up.
i did find a backup option but it said i didnt have a libaray or something..
i can browse all the songs in itunes.

any ideas?

i used idump seemed to work much same as other options.

The folders are normally hidden so enable hidden files in Windows folder options.

Then you will notice that the tracks are spread out into loads of folders.
Very annoying.

I'd do a Windows search on the IPod drive and choose to search by *.mp3 to get a list all the music. Then select all and drag to whereever you need to put them.

I gave the person in question a dvd full of her music in .m4a format.

she loaded it into itunes and was very happy.

Thing is she can not get the songs to play on her ipod.

She can get new songs she paid for to play on her ipod and she can right click one of the songs i got from her ipod and convert it to aac and that plays on her ipod.

When she converts it to aac it adds a duplicate into itunes but i cant see the new file in the folder where the orginal is.

So....

when i convert a song does it just modify the current one effectivly making a new file.

why do 2 then appear in itunes is there a way of doing this to all her music and getting it to work on her ipod?

ive never really used an ipod so im not much use to her.

any help would be great thanks in advance.

Easy way around it (assuming the files all contain tags).

On a windows PC, turn on the option to show hidden files, then go to the ipod in Explorer.

Find the folder "iPod_Control" and open it. Copy the "Music" sub folder to your PC.

Now, import all the songs into iTunes. iTunes should rename the files correctly based on their tag info when you import.
