Safe mode blue screens but normal is fine?

Hi all,

Done loads of searches on this issue but I can't quite find a real fix. My situation is that I can boot into Windows normally no problem but when I try safe mode it blue screens before reaching Windows and reboots.
In normal windows I've run numerous scans, done sfc and chkdsk /r etc. and no problems found... I've also done last known good configuration.

It's Windows XP by the way.

Any ideas why safe mode won't work or how it can be fixed? Most issues reported on the net are where windows won't start in safe mode or normal mode...

tried there, can't find anything...
I've changed error settings so that it doesn't automatically restart. I'll try that to get the error code.

Re: Safe mode blue screens but normal is fine?

safe mode will only load windows standard drives for devices, whereas 'normal' will boot the drivers you have loaded. Sounds to me like one or more windows based standard drivers are corrupt, thus causing an issue upon safe mode booting.

XP repair should fix the issue by overwriting any corrupt files with fresh ones from the install disc.

try going to start->run and type "sfc /scannow"(without the quotes), you may be asked for your Windows disk while it scans. What this is doing is running the "System File Checker", it compares core windows files on your system against a reference(i.e. your windows disc), and makes sure none of them have been changed or corrupted.

Not yet, was going to be my last option though as I can't find the XP CD at the moment...
I copied the I386 folder to the hard disk to save needing the disk.

Already tried that one I'm afraid. Good thinking though. I think it's going to have to be a case of using the disc and doing a repair through the setup. I thought sfc or chkdsk would sort it but it wants to be awkward
