Re: New laptop. Decisions, decisions.

Thanks again zing nice link. If you were to choose between a Samsung and a Dell which make would you go for. I had it in the back of my mind that Dells reputation was not as good as Samsung?

Re: New laptop. Decisions, decisions.

Well I dunno lol Dell have a lot of fans on here im not a fan of their towers but then im not a fan of anyones towers bar mine lol I can not say either way im sure they will both be pretty much the same. Only the Dell you can up the speed of the cpu and other parts ie add more ram and a bigger hdd also you can have a custom paint job if you so desire

Re: New laptop. Decisions, decisions.

Cheers for that zing. This will be my first computer that I haven't had a hand in building. Aria have always been very helpful, shame they don't have many laptops.

Re: New laptop. Decisions, decisions.

I would choose the Dell over the Samsung, heard fantastic things about Dell laptops. They'll even put you XP on if you request it IIRC. Plus of course you can upgrade things as and when.

Also, Jo, i have a now (relatively) old Intel Core 2 Duo E6300, which runs at 1.86Ghz when not overclocked. It handled rendering things perfectly fine, pretty fast line of CPU's (actually the fastest architecture around).
Of course, overclocked to 3.2Ghz (On a cold day ) It absolutely flew, rendered somefair-sized (1024x768) Terragen images within about 10seconds.

Colloquially, particularly in the adjective form apoplectic, apoplexy means furious, enraged, or upset to the point of being unable to deal with a situation rationally or diplomatically

I quite fancy trying out Vista so no problems with any of the laptops. I am going into PC World tomorrow to have a play with both the R60 Samsung and the Dells They do a nice Pink one I understand.

Re: New laptop. Decisions, decisions.

Time for an update. I drove Mr Glynne mad with my indecision so he abandoned me in PCworld yesterday morning allowing me to play for ages. Even the sales staff got fed up of me and just gave me open access to half a dozen machines.

I have bought the Samsung R60plus with the C2D T5550 processor, 2GB RAM and 160 HD. I got it for £399.00 and (I think because the staff were glad to be getting rid of me ) they threw in free tech support for 3 months.

Had 'fun' installing the trial of Windows Office 2007, 4 hours to download on my challenged Baguley server and this was after a titanic struggle to get my old router working, which lasted for 2 frustrating hours. Spent ages tapping in every password ever used by me and my son. Only to realized that we hadn't used one. Wire free is a marvellous invention.

Not impressed with word 2007, I will probably be ditching it in favour of Openwindows in the next few days.

Not made my mind up about Vista, I seem to be converting it back to XP with every tweak I make.

Thanks for everyone's help over the last few days. You were all great and a real credit to the forum. Now, do I have a G&T or a shandy whist I sit on the patio browsing away in the sun. Decisions, decisions.

G&T so you can fulfil the original dream

Glad you got a good laptop though, and yep, it's always good to get open access to a few machines... Although i wish you could have a real demo, what with being able to benchmark them etc to see how they really perform.

Openoffice btw

Re: New laptop. Decisions, decisions.

when i worked at comet i use to benchmark all the pc's using 3dmark 06 and then if they wanted to, know the score i told them great way of getting them to go for a dearer one but didnt like that, fact after a while hence the fact don't work there no more.

anyways glad to hear you got something you like and that they let you, have a play with them comet would have never let you do that.
