Disabling Network on Corporate Machine
First - apologies for lack of knowledge of technicalities of computers. Bear with me!! I have an HP laptop which is ex corporate and was networked. Can anyone tell me how to un-network it so that it will connect to wireless broadband at home without looking for its server (presumably!)

The laptop will probably have lots of company and network related software still loaded on it, the best way around it would be to reformat the laptop thus completely cleaning off any settings

goto internet options connections and select never dial a connection . What exactly is it doing?

my work laptop only has the network configured using the RJ45 socket, so using wireless it can connect to any network I want it to. I just have to change internet settings in I.E. , Firefox etc to not use a proxy to surf.

Make sure no proxy settings are filled in by going to Internet options in Control panel, Connections tab, Lan settings, and check proxy. Should be empty.

Internet Options LAN has no proxy and never dial a connection. when trying to connect (outlook) it says the server entered cannot be found or may be down. Re the advice to reformat it, can you please give me step by step guidance!!!

Did the laptop come with any sort of restore disks? Or anything like a Windows or driver disk?
If not then we would need the exact model number in order to assist, and it would help as well to know which version of Windows you plan to install.

So was this your corp laptop? If Outlook has some existing settings, they would only be there for an existing domain user.
If so, in Control Panel there should be a 'mail' icon, which will allow you to delete the Exchange 'profile' and start from scratch. However, proper Outlook works best with Exchange - if you are going to be using an ISP mail account, eg ntlworld.com, you might be better of with Outlook Express or Thunderbird.

Unfortunately, comes with nothing to assist - but I have XP Pro for my last laptop, which is what is on this one. Which "exact model number" do you need to help? please.

There should be a label somewhere with the maker's name and the model number of the laptop. Most likely on the underside of the machine.
Have a look here:

That should give you an idea of the info required to track down drivers.
