Linux Distro - Netgear MA101

Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a Linux distro that works out of the box (so to speak) with a Netgear MA101 USB wireless adaptor?

Many thanks

A lot depends on the actual device ID, as manufacturers sneakily change chipsets sometimes but keep the model name the same.

Not sure if you're using XP or Vista, but for XP get the vendor & device ID as follows:

1. Right click on My Computer & select Manage.

2. Select Device Manager.

3. Double click (or right click & choose Properties) on the USB network adapter

4. On the details tab, select Hardware Ids from the dropdown.

5. Post back the numbers after vid & pid

fred, for it to 100% work out of the box on any linux platform we need to know which wireless chip is in it as some are instant whilst others you have to play with the drivers a bit.

broadcom is normally instant.

Re: Linux Distro - Netgear MA101

Use NDISWrapper and then it doesn't matter too much what device it is (supports a lot of wireless adapters). It uses the Windows drivers for the device and 'wraps it' so you can use it within Linux.

---------- Post added at 20:11 ---------- Previous post was at 20:07 ----------

NDISwrapper supports it:

Re: Linux Distro - Netgear MA101

I had trouble getting ndiswapper to work, wouldn't it be easier to download various livecd distros (Fedora, Ubuntu, openSUSE, Mandriva, come to mind off the top of my head) and see which work?

www.distrowatch.com and read which have good wireless support.

If you download and run a LiveCD (Ubuntu would be a good choice), you can get the hardware ID of the device before installing on the hard disk.
Once in the Live Linux, open up a terminal window and use (as root or sudo)
lspci
and
lspci -n
This will tell you the chipset detail and then you can google for Linux drivers.

The PC hung, and I had to reset... Now I only see the 'adhoc network' mode... and I can't configure it to connect.
