What OS to install?
Running Vista Home Premium on my Dual core / 2gb laptop at the moment and to be honest it's performing like a pig. It freezes and locks up and itunes is not happy at all.
So I have the following options : (All genuine licenced gear as well)
Vista Business
Vista Ultimate
Windows 2008 server
XP Home
XP Pro
I have 64 bit version of most of these but don't know what benefits I would gain from using them or if my laptop supports them? ( HPG5056A).
Which is going to be my best option?

Re: What OS to install?
I can't see performance being any different on any other version of vista.

Re: What OS to install?
I used to run vista ultimate 32 and then 64 on my Toshiba laptop.
The 64 performed much better (although both were the "dell" naughty versions as I was just evaluating them, yes, that's right...)
So, with my new quad core pc I took advantage of the low OEM price from Scan (£104) and went with V64 ultimate.
Hmm, so far it's nice, but it's still a pain in the backside.
Can't turn off the driver signing insistance thing, so the on the fly overclocking software that came with my MSI board won't install, vmWare server (one of the reasons I went for a powerful PC) doesn't want to work, so frankly it's been a dissapointment, and is going to be hard work (unless Zing can come up with a known solution) if at all possible to get things working how I want them.
Course having the matrix dropping down as my wall paper is nice.
I think that V32 ultimate doesn't insist on teh driver signing, so is somewhat more friendly.
Ho-hum.

I quite liked Vista business when I trialled it but was wondering if it had less of the bells and whistles that seem to slow down VHP.
I'm leading to installing xp pro as other than the aero it offers everything I need and as a plus point won't decide if it's going to hide parts of my network from time to time that Vista does. Also copying files on the network with Vista is pathetic.
When I shared with Bopdude we have an 11mbs adhoc wireless network for sharing internet that was much better than Vista on 100mbs wired or 54mbs wireless.

Re: What OS to install?
The T2080 processor is not 64 bit, XP/Vista 64 not an option (at least according to Wiki)
Probably better off trying to figure out what's wrong with your current OS install. I have Vista Enterprise running on a T2300 with 2Gb and works a treat.

It has not been as speedy as xp since I bought it and I have installed extra ram in to try help. I really don't like the way that the network menus have been implemented and it makes me feel like I'm an noob when sorting things out. This is especially frustrating as I know xp networking inside and out.
I think I'll probably drop back to xp pro perhaps giving a clean install of sever 2008 a quick trial although I did install it on an older p4 machine but could not get the drivers for the network card or the wireless card to work.

Re: What OS to install?
Dare I suggest the latest Ubuntu with an XP VM for those 'must have Windose' moments?
Linux should fly on a spec like that.

32 bit does not have driver signing. Ive not really run into any need to disable it but it is meant to be do able try this http://news.softpedia.com/news/Disab...ta-53491.shtml edit looks like this is the same info you had before
VMware workstation 6 works for me
bit more info here http://thebackroomtech.wordpress.com...-vista-64-bit/ but m guessing if sp1 is installed it wont work
You can also do it by booting and hitting F8 apparently there is a way there to disable it for next boot. I know its a pain in the bottom to do this every time but its still a way
@mark just chuck xp at it

Re: What OS to install?
@ Xaccers - you could create your own certs, but think this will be a fairly long winded process...
@ Handyman - yep go with XP...
