Turning off the welcome screen
I have done this before. But forgot how to do it again.
I would like to set up Windows XP so I dont have to click my name to enter Windows. So when I turn it on I can leave it to load up straight to the desktop.
How do I do this?
Cheers

Re: Turning off the welcome screen
Firstly you must have only 1 user account on the computer and the guest account turned off.
Secondly you must remove the password on the account.
Reboot, et viola, it should login automatically.
Failing that the second way is as follows:
Go to start > run > "control userpasswords2" (without the quotes)
and use that box to tell the system to automatically login, even if you have multiple users or a password.

Re: Turning off the welcome screen
Then what you need to do is kiss goodbye to the security of your system/data in the even that it should ever get lost/stolen.
Personally I find that the application of full-drive encryption and a decent account password provides benefits that easily outweigh the aggro of having to login when the laptop starts up.
Obviously your situation may well be different to mine, and I appreciate that. The value of my advice may go down as well as up

Re: Turning off the welcome screen
I'm with Raistlin - should never have an account without a password, or allow Windows to logon automatically. But tis the user's choice

Re: Turning off the welcome screen
I'd rather go with having a password and turning autologon on in the registry than having an account with no password (but then, I'd rather keep having to type in a password).

And something like Oph-Crack (Rainbow tables) will find the password usually within a few minutes

Thing is though, if you have a networked PC (and lets face it, many users still just have USB ADSL modems with no protection), if you're auto loging in as admin, you're giving anyone free access.
At least a password will stop most newbie hackers (the script kiddies that think they're 1337)
