The key is irrelevant until you come to activate Vista. You can even skip the point in setup where it asks for it.
Even if this weren't the case, it wouldn't stop you booting the DVD.

You'd be surprised how many people don't know about this. At work, we have a system where users can download various ISOs, and even though the system gives explicit and clear instructions on writing ISOs using most popular CD/DVD writing programs on the download page, a lot of people still get it wrong.

Where on the internet did you get the image?

You're using an illegitimate version of the software then.
That's the problem.
If your original CD has messed up, contact MS UK 0870 6010100 and talk to them about getting it replaced, normally around £11 for media sets though that was a few years ago.
If you got it with the PC, then it's likely to be OEM, in which case you'll have to contact the PC's manufacturer

Usually the best advice to follow. At least that way if you have any problems, Microsoft will replace it.

Re: Microsoft finally stopped hackers?
Go back to the retailer you bought your original copy from, taking it with you and ask them to replace it.
Otherwise what you're asking is for help on how to install a dodgy copy of it on your system.

He has a license key, if he has access to newsgroups he can go download the MSDN release which is 100% legal..and requires a legal license key...which he has..

Then I suggest he tries it via MSDN.
From the sounds of things though it's not a MSDN version he's trying.

Technically it doesnt matter where he downloads the MSDN release from as its still technically a trial ISO which he has a valid license key for..
