Re: How's this hardware?

Well I ordered some bits and bobs and built my PC (well all except the RAM)

Q9450 Quadcore 2.6GHz 12MB L2 1333MHz FSB
2GB DDR2 1066 Corsair (2x1GB)
500GB HDD
MSI P35 Diamond
Vista ultimate 64 OEM with Nero8 suite (£104!)
560W PSU

Unfortunately the m/b only takes DDR3 memory, which I've now ordered and Scan are going to refund me the DDR2 cost when I return it, which is nice.
So come Tuesday I should have it up and running

Re: How's this hardware?

does that board take that cpu ? I just bought a P35 board that wouldnt without a bios update

ships with an x fi card nice board

support for your cpu since bios revision 2.2 which was released in november so you should be good to go

So much for opting for a dual core cant fault ya

Well the CPU, RAM and HDD were bundled for £300 so I found it hard to resist!
Especially after you mentioned 45nm
Just wish I'd spotted that you can get both DDR2 and DDR3 1066 as I would have phoned them to see about swapping out the RAM for DDR3.
Imagine how loud I groaned when I realised it wouldn't fit!

What is the wattage on that? I hope you don't have to RMA it, them big 1Kw suckers make a mess when they blow up

Re: How's this hardware?

The 45nm processors are only 5% faster clock for clock than the Q6600, in response to the "how much faster is it" question.

If you were going for DDR3 1066, you'd of been much better off with DDR2 1066, because it has much lower latencies, which makes heaps of difference. It would be better buying a cheaper P35 board with DDR2 support, such as the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L (or DS3R depending on what features you want) or if you really wanted DDR3 later on, then you could of got the GA-P35C-DS3R which supports both DDR2 and 3.

However, you're going to find DDR2-1066 will perform better than its DDR3 equivilant.

Re: How's this hardware?

It's 7-7-7-20 compared to 5-5-5-15 for the DDR2 (which won't fit in the motherboard)
Or I could run the DDR3 at 1333MHz.

Re: How's this hardware?

the bandwidth will make up for the latency and as for 5% speed for speed increase well the phenoms clock higher but are not better its in the core lol

Re: How's this hardware?

Intel's core architecture is slightly better than AMD's, and as the Intel cores can also overclock a hell of a lot more (they are also in a lot of cases faster at slower clock speeds) they have so much more headroom. A Q6600 can easily be clocked to beat a Q3000 or a Q9450. This generation of processors is also dependant on raw clock speed aswell as good architecture and Intel wins on both fronts.

DDR2&3 1066 : DDR3 1066 is slower than DDR2 1066, latency is everything with RAM, and that effects data rate more than just ramping up the clocks. If you get some enthusiast RAM, you can also drop the DDR2's latencies down to 4-4-4-8 and up the clock speed to around 1110 Mhz no problem. DDR3 only shines at higher clock speeds, and the latencies are currently very high.

Re: How's this hardware?

i get 5.9 for cpu/graphics but ram is 5.8 and hdd is 5.5.
but how have you got 5.9 for the ram when you only have, 2gb of ddr2 1066? if thats right
i have 4gb of ddr2 800mhz so i should still get 5.8 but yours should only then be about 5.0ish.
or am i wrong with how this vista experience thing works?

Have to send the DDR2 back as my mother board can't take it.

Now having fun with bloomin' V64 driver signing insistance grrr
