awful file transfer speeds via wifi

hello all

well i have a pain in the bum problem. I have a media PC where i play games and watch movies, prior to moving I had all my machines connected via cable, now i have wifi. I was expecting slower speeds, but even with full signal strength, i max out at 1mb/s!

this is with or without encryption using any mixture of the 3 pc's in this place

the living area is open plan, so the signals from the router is always at least 4 bars. all say connected at 54Mbps so i was hoping to get at least 5mb/s or something

any ideas?? the router is a aol (reason i went with them!) SpeedTouch ST585v6 and this laptop has its own intel wifi and the other 2 machines use buffalo airstation 54g usb....

What wireless router are you using?

Also, please post your full system specs and correct me if i am wrong but, are you on about tranfering files via wireless or via pc to pc?

router: SpeedTouch ST585v6

computers consists of xp media centre, xp home and also vista64. yep i have a shared folder on each of the computers and its copying files over the wifi network

Is the transfer speed slow on just one of the pc's or is it all of them, the reason i ask is that Vista had a very slow transfer rate untill SP1 was released which sped this up.

Do you have the same wireless card in each of the pc's or are they different? Sometimes mixes cards can cause stability issues.

Check what other wireless networks the other machine can see. If there are many then that may be the reason for the slow speeds. You should also check that the router is set to support 802.11G. If its set to 802.11B then it will only get 1 to 11 mbps. It may make sense to set the router to only support 802.11G, I think having it support both B and G slows down the clients with a 802.11G connection.

nope sadly its all of them, which is leading me to believe its a router issue?

2 of the machines have the same buffalo 54g usb devices and this laptop has its own intel device built in, which used to work fine when i used it occasionally on an older wifi network.

yeah its set to G and all say connected at 48~54 etc

1 meg a sec is sooo slow for these larger files

Try with only one machine connected, then add one, etc.

This may help ID the suspect PC

I have a speedtouch 780, which I did use for Wireless, but, Tbh, it was crap. I switched back to the old WRT54G it replaced (still needed to use the 780 as an ADSL modem, and wired router for some sockets), and when I had configured the WRT to act as a wireless bridge, it was a *lot* more reliable and faster.

yeah im going to sky broadband soon so maybe ill just see how their router works

only went to AOL as my phone is TPON so no one would take the order and AOL had a no contract job, now its been activated i can magically get the service from any of the other providers!

Thats about right for 54G wireless perticullarly if there's more than one device on the wireless.

If your lucky and conditions are good and its a wireless > wired transfer you might be able to pull 20 - 28Mbit/s but that's about it.
