Re: A Laptop...

Avoid Acer they really are not that good, i nearly bought 1 but saw sense and went for a Dell as it had a far better spec and far better resolution.

Dell all the way!

Fair enough. It's personal opinion. The last (and only) Acer I owned was a piece of junk. HDD temps regularly rose to 50 Celcius on when doing anything that that was slightly intensive (and the HDD died as a result of it). That's just poor laptop design imo. I was very happy when my wife spilt coke on it, and I got to buy the Dell I have now. I'm very happy with it. The only flaw it has the audio output is at the right hand side near the front of the laptop, so there's a wire in the way.

Re: A Laptop...

I have an Acer, it does the job I bought it for, and it's not that hot, pretty cool actually. I upgraded the RAM to 2gb and replaced Vista with XP. I use it as a desktop at the moment, i've added my spare 17" tft as dual screen and bought a cheap wireles keyboard and mouse to save on the ware and tear of the laptop. I'd recomend one.

Re: A Laptop...

At work, we only buy Dell for laptops. Various configurations, but they've all been sturdy, even the Inspiron range which were supposed to be for the less industrious user, yet daily use over the years has failed to break any. I got the longer life battery for my Inspiron 2600. I can get well over 4 hours from it if I'm just doing stuff like browsing, and that's with a core duo type CPU.

The Viao is a great looking laptop, but you are paying for that branding. What is more important, functions, or looks?

edit: Oops the 2600 was the old model - two of those are still going strong (apart from a dud battery) after 6 years. I've currently got a 6400

Re: A Laptop...

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525. It was £390 including delivery etc. Vista Premium with 2gig of ram. It ain't spectacular but a good everyday machine. I've looked at the XPS jobbies and they are really nice. As has been said it all depends on what you want to use it for.
George.

Re: A Laptop...

I'm another to recommend acer. Got 4 Acers in the house now. My Dads old laptop died after 2 years but it was second hand. My old laptop is getting tatty now its nearly 5 years old, but still working. My new laptop is an Extensa 5620 which I got a month ago. Plays everything I've tried on it so far (BF1942, C&C Generals, gMod) on medium graphics. Its a core2duo so good battery life. My Dads new laptop (forget the model) is also good for the same but his is an AMD X2.

I find Dells aren't that well built. They feel plasticy and flimsy, compared to the nice build quality on Acers. I also like Acers non-glare screens, they are always a bonus.

Pretty sure they will. Although do you actually need Vista?
Since I got my Macbook I've not needed to put Windows onto it, everything I've needed it to do can be done natively.

Alienware are overrated and over priced. Unless you're silly and only pay for the make go-ahead and waste your money, but if you have sense, you will pay for the quality of the components inside.

Re: A Laptop...

I got this one for £429 including £100 cash back from HP. Could be on offer again soon.

It's a little gem. I like the fingerprint access and the inbuilt encryption.

Re: A Laptop...

have a look at the Dell XPS 1330 - just bought one for a client and it flies... 2.4c2d, 4gb ram, led screen etc etc - it even comes with decent earphones and has an ir media controller in the side slot.

Acer make some pretty good ones too - try and get a 7200rpm hard drive though, most come with a 5400 (opr even 4200) speed disk, and imo this can have a fair impact on performance
