http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...=14&subcat=940 this one
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...=14&subcat=940 or this one
Need to replace my crappy 74gig sata 2meg cache jobbie. My pc is grinding to a halt and its starting to take ages getting into xp and the hd light is always on full whack. It cant keep upwith a good game and and my linux and distros downloading
My board does not support sata 2. But my new board upgrade will . So I will see some beneift going from a 2 meg cache to a 32meg cache . All opinions will be noticed and of course any advice from the big blue shark

Re: A New Hard Drive
I vote for none. I have heard bad things about Samsung drives.
I'd go for this one:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=HD-146-SE
There is a 5 year warranty for a reason. Great drive

Re: A New Hard Drive
i voted Samsung, on strength of mine I bought a year or so ago to replace a maxtor that died.
I'd avoid IBM/Hitachi Deathstar or Maxotr.
As others have said WD are highly regarded, as are Seagate. I went for Samsung, as at the time well regarded for quietness, speed, and reliability. I didn't realise they had gone down hill.

Re: A New Hard Drive
Neither, both are crap/nasty/fail easily.
WD all the way, only good HD supplier left imo.

Re: A New Hard Drive
I thought they were keeping them as 2 brands, like Audi and Skoda, or Tesco Finest and Tesco Value

Re: A New Hard Drive
I voted for the Samsung, but I would really really buy a Maxtor or Seagate.
Don't even go near the DEATHSTAR.

Re: A New Hard Drive
I am in agreement with most of the above, WD are by far the better manufacturer of HDD's and if by chance you do get a fail their RMA is very very painless.

My current drive which I've been running for about 3 years now is a Samsung. It replaced two Western Digital drives that died for seemingly no reason.
It is an IDE drive though, not SATA, and it's so far the best drive I've had.

True, but I filled in the RMA from their web site for both my failed WD drives and they wanted me to send them to Germany. Not really worth the cost, when I could buy new ones (more capacity as well) for the same price as sending the old ones away.
