getting \windows\system32\config\system errors

Hi

When I boot up I'm getting the above error message saying I need to boot up into the recovery console from the xp cd. I've done that and ran a chkdsk /p on my harddrive but its still bringing up errors. I've heard of a way you can use activate a system restore point from this console. Will this possibly solve my problem and other ways I could try?

Re: getting \windows\system32\config\system errors

In the recovery console try the following commands:

fixboot
fixmbr

They've fixed this particular problem for me before.

Re: getting \windows\system32\config\system errors

whats does fixboot do? I've run fixmbr because I've been playing around with ubuntu with spare harddrives.

Re: getting \windows\system32\config\system errors

Fixmbr creates a new master boot record, fixboot creates a new volume boot record. You could also try "bootcfg.exe" to create a new boot.ini file.

Re: getting \windows\system32\config\system errors

I thought this problem had to do with registry files. This would'nt impact the registry would they? So fixboot does not format your drive right?

Re: getting \windows\system32\config\system errors

No, it just fixes the boot record. The contents of the volume remain as they were.

Re: getting \windows\system32\config\system errors

If your registry is fubared, it is possible to extract a copy from a recent system restore point. It's far from trivial though. There is a pretty good MS article on the procedure here.

Always try the simple things first though, before thinking about the complex stuff.

Re: getting \windows\system32\config\system errors

ok. One question when I first used the recovery console it used to ask me for the admin password now it does not ask me for a password could this be the reason I'm getting this error. I have Windows xp media centre edition.

Re: getting \windows\system32\config\system errors

The recovery console should always ask for the admin password even if it is blank if there is a valid registry SECURITY file. I guess if it isn't the registry files may be missing completely (guessing here)??

Thanks Aragorn...

It was the registry files. I ran through that ms KB that you recommended and sorted it out in less than 30min and was quiet straight forward.
