Question Your system may be at risk

Hi all after recently updating windows xp i now get a message on start up telling me i dont have a valid version of windows, i have never had this problem before i have had windows xp installed on my pc since new. also there is an icon in the lower right tool bar telling me that my system may be at risk all the time. When i follow the link to microsoft website it tells me i have to pay for an activation key. Is there any other way around this?, i have tried to carry out system restore to before the update and it wont let me HELP

You have installed windows genuine advantage. Is your windows legit ? if so get in touch with microsoft. If it isnt then google for a removal tool or buy a key

Yes as far as i was aware my windows was legit, when i follow the link to mirosoft site i am told that my lisence key is a volume license key which has been blocked. i have had windows xp on my pc for aprox five years since the pc was new. My pc was purchased from a small pc repair shop so i dont think they will want to help me after five or so years. Is there another way other than spending £95 on the licence key which i really dont want to spend because i havent done anything wrong other than updte my pc.

Re: Your system may be at risk

if its a corp key and your not a corp then its not likely a legal key

I cant really go into any more detail on what to do as it may be frowned upon so really its upto you.

seeing as its a volume license key + xp pro (based on the ~£90 price), i'd say the copy isn't legit and is using the infamous FCKGW key

Re: Your system may be at risk

Do you have an OEM sticker on your PC?

IT may be that the repair shop just stuck their own (illegal) copy of XP on it rather than bother getting the correct disk and using your key.

No sticker = No license.

They robbed you. If these guys are still in business and won't make you legal then MS would be very interested to hear about them.
I believe they offer a deal where you get a cheap license for turning in pirates.

Re: Your system may be at risk

I had a similar situation recently and when I was prompted to install drivers from my XP pro disk and I discovered it was cracked / broken. I phoned MS to enquire about a replacement disk - only to be told that the version I had was an "illegal" copy.

Despite my protestations the young woman with whom I spoke was insistent that it was illegal and that I would have to buy a new disk / license. I asked to be transferred through to their legal affairs department so I could report the supposed "illegal" sale of the software and the company in question.

After several minutes of "Ho, hum" I was told that my disk / licence was entirely legitimate as it had been purchased prior to Feb 2000 and something or other.

Lesson:

Don't assume that either the MS website or the first level support have any clue, whatsoever, when it comes to determining the legality / legitimacy of the software you are running.
