Good online Backup
Not sure if any of you have heard of this company, they are becoming quite well-known so you may have.
Mozy, I have been using them to back up my documents, photos, settings, emails, and music. You sign up, download the application, and it will run in the background backing up all your data. I like it because it stays out of the way, will back up your files automatically, and also after the first backup it then only uploads changed files so its much much quicker.

Saves messing around with disks. And of course, the fact its quick and automatic means you can let it update often without any input from you. Which means more backups, more often.
The first 2gb is free then its $5 a month for unlimited storage. They seem to take good care of the data as well. SSL for uploading, odd hard drive stuff to make sure its safe and backed up and their end as well

Re: Good online Backup
I use my hosting provider - I registered a domain name with Linux / Windows hosting - 20.66 euro per year - unlimited disk space / transfer. I then use a FTP client to upload (backup) important stuff to a folder.
Think this works out a bit cheaper if you have a few GB's to upload!

Been using it for a while, infact I have 2 accounts with them one paid and one free one
(paid one backs up main pc, free one backs up the odd few files on my laptop)
They know I have 2 accounts and they don't seem to mind (since you can't have a paid and free computer on the same account )
I used to backup music but I don't bother other than locally to an external disk its stuff like documents and photos I'm more worried about having an offsite copy off since those are the things once gone can never be replaced.

Re: Good online Backup
Well I am in the process of a 9gb music upload to Mozy, but i can stop and re-start it. Like i said the fact they only upload updated files after this makes it more appealing. Download a Song of iTunes and a day or so later it would have been backed up without me doing a thing

Re: Good online Backup
Sorry to bump an old thread but I am interested in doing the same as Damien. Has anyone else used alternatives like carbonite or IDrive-E? Are you able to view your files via a browser and download the odd file when not at home?

Re: Good online Backup
I've been using Carbonite for a month or two now and it seems to work very well. I travel a lot, so knowing that my system is getting backed up anywhere I'm working and hooked up to an internet connection is very reassuring. It costs $50 a year which I reckon is good value for unlimited storage. YMMV
