MS Word help!
Afternoon,
Got my I'm thick head on today...
In MS Word, say you have a doc that has sections like:
1 - ABC
2 - DEF
3 - Blah
4 - ZXY
On the first page I have a TOC which goes like:
1..............ABC
2..............DEF
3..............Blah
4..............ZXY
Now - I want add a section between 1 and 2 and then want the other sections to renumber automatically...
How do I do that? Can't remember how to do it!

No - that just updates the TOC - if I add a new section in between 1 and 2 and name it 2 - section 2 should get renamed to 3, old 3 becomes 4, old 4 becomes 5 etc...
I think it's done on the style formatting somehow.

Re: MS Word help!
Pass, TBH I don't spend much time playing with formatting in that way.
I tend to name the sections what I want them to be and then build a ToC with those names, if they need changing I'll normally change them manually.
If you want to email it to me I'll happily take a look for you.

Re: MS Word help!
I know what I'll do - I'll just remove the numbers until the doc is complete! Et Voila!

Re: MS Word help!
I find it's best to lay down the raw text first, then do the formatting last. If your section headers are defined as a style, with numbering, you should just be able to add a section and the numbers will adjust automatically. That said, Word can be a bit of mystery when it comes to automatic numbering - I usually have to bodge it.

Re: MS Word help!
can you not use the numbers and then indent more between the 1 & 2, that should start a new number list
ik
EDIT: check out the doc file
or, check bullets and numbers they have what you want
also when you check what you want through bullets and numbering, make your main choice (bold) then go to end of one press enter, then TAB this auto matically changes the number, then enter TAB TAB to get the 1.3.1 numbers
Code:
1: one
1.1: something
1.2: new
1.3: here
1.3.1: and
1.3.2: again
2: two
3: three

Re: MS Word help!
In order for a Table of Contents (TOC) to work, is important to make sure that each category (to be highlighted within the TOC) has a heading, I.e Heading 1, 2, 3, etc. You can check your headings by using the Outline view (within word).
Word has several methods of producing headings, all of which are selectable either via the formatting tool bar and/or from within the Format/theme menu.
When putting a document together, all you need to remember is to make sure that you always allocate a heading to each new category you wish to record within your TOC. When you add a new heading (between the others) those below the new entries "should" automatically update accordingly.
In order to record this from within your TOC, you'll need to simply update the TOC (at any time) during your document compilation. One thing, try not to confuse headings with bullets and numbering. If you get stuck, PM me with the test document and I'll see what I can do to clarify.
Hope this helps
Good luck and Si Thee.
