DX10 hardware obsolete.

Sorry is this has already been posted, I searched it! Couldnt find it.

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=41577

Put short, I am certainly glad I decided not to upgrade yet. Well to be honest I dont want Vista at the moment, but probably will in the future. Unreal Tourny III .

EDIT: Link Fixed

Pretty much what I am going to do.

The really scary thing is, Microsoft released this pretty dam sudden. I mean, I havent read any sort of follow up to an official press release about this, they just blurted it out in one instant.

It would be like hearing tomorrow that its official HL2 and mods will only work one DX10.1 cards from the next patch. Of course thats not the case just an example.

Did the GFX card vendors just shout PROFIT!

Re: DX10 hardware obsolete.

jackson, they did yes.

they knew already that MS was going to have 10.1 pretty soon but Nividia at least never bothered with implementing this already in their 8*** series, ATI have done so a bit in the 2900's but only in those.

(I'll have a looksie for the correct info)

Re: DX10 hardware obsolete.

I dont understand.

The features in DX10.1 arent new. They are on the current DX10 model, just optional rather than compulsary.

From what I am reading DX10.1 is just a new standard, as the quote explains below. I'm sure new drivers/fireware could be released for the current 8 series and new ati equivelant.

"The spec revision basically makes a number of things that are optional in DX10 compulsory under the new standard - such as 32-bit floating point filtering, as opposed to the 16-bit current. 4xAA is a compulsory standard to support in 10.1, whereas graphics vendors can pick and choose their anti-aliasing support currently."

Re: DX10 hardware obsolete.

Does anyone else think that the only way Dx10 is going to get large scale software producer support, is if Microsoft do a U turn and backport DX10 to XP ?

They said M$ was a software company - though whoever they were they're keeping their heads down now!

An XP klugde to run DX10 games would be cool but it doesn't seem like it's there yet. This related article got me wondering (puts on tin-foil lined grassy knoll conspiracy theory hat ) that perhaps one reason behind M$ releasing DX10.1 is to make mandatory those features of DX10 that would be most difficult to reverse engineer into XP.

Re: DX10 hardware obsolete.

dx10 is still in the realms of the benchmarkers ... as if I actually play games on my PC lols ...

I just find that developers writing for a PC write without any sense of passion whereas the software written for the consoles is bleeding edge.

Having seen what the xbox 360 can do all I can say is that it pi88es on my current 8800gtx in SLI @ 14000 3dmarks. Enough said.

The irony of the story is that that technically my PC 'IS' computationally and graphically more powerful than the xbox 360. However I don't think I'll ever buy another PC gfx card simply for gaming.
