PC Mark 05 result indicate any problems for running games?
I've been having some troubles running games (Framerate is fine, although game pauses frequently as textures load); I just ran PCMark05, and got the following results -
http://service.futuremark.com/orb/re...=0&UID=9717014
Unfortunately, one of the tests failed for some unknown reason, but the basics and my system specs are there.
Could someone please identify where the weaknesses are in my system?
Thanks,
Mike

Oh, you'll be greeted by a screen telling you the test results are invalid; ignore and click "Result details", "config" etc

Your PCMark05 score seems to be invalid, and unfortunately the Result Analyzer cannot be displayed for this result.

Yeah, I know - one of the tests failed - just click the "Result details" button next to it. I believe my mark would've been somewhere between 5 - 7000 but it's some of the individual results I'm worried about...the HDD is one of them.

Re: PC Mark 05 result indicate any problems for running games?
Here are the results - HDD Test Suite
HDD - XP Startup 7.5 MB/s
HDD - Application Loading 4.94 MB/s
HDD - General Usage 3.75 MB/s
HDD - Virus Scan 77.85 MB/s
HDD - File Write 51.06 MB/s
(I did this earlier on)
I'll reboot now and give you the name

The Bios calls it "PM-Maxator 6Y080LO". It's an 80GB Hard Drive and I've had it since 2002.

Re: PC Mark 05 result indicate any problems for running games?
Seagate Technology - SeaTools
Run this... Just to make sure the drive is physically OK.
Seagate bought Maxtor and this is the latest version for both brands.

Re: PC Mark 05 result indicate any problems for running games?
It's IDE, only has 2MB of Cache and runs @ 7200 RPM.
I'm just wondering if the 2MB of cache is having an impact on performance in games? Or pehaps it has slow seek times? Could anyone confirm from the results above?

Ok, I'll run it now, thanks

Come to think of it, I have dropped my pc in the past (Long before I'd installed any of the new hardware)

Yeah, to be honest I think it's just slow... but nothing up with checking its health.

Re: PC Mark 05 result indicate any problems for running games?
Seatools wont start up...I've had compatability issues with some programs in windows - I'm running Windows Pro x64 Edition.
See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.
For example:
<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>
When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

Strangely, it doesn't seem to recognise the drive..?

Seing as I am having performance issues anyway, where could I get a decent hard drive at a decent price? (on a budget - <£50) If it doesn't solve the problem, the only thing I think it could be would be the memory...(I'm not particularly looking for size - just performance)

Re: PC Mark 05 result indicate any problems for running games?
Run seatools as a bootable ISO then.
x64 XP - why? I run 32 bit Vista.
---------- Post added at 01:58 ---------- Previous post was at 01:57 ----------
quite frankly, it depends on your mainboard, what do you have - IDE, SATA? What chipset?
I like Samsung drives right now, mine is dead quiet.

Re: PC Mark 05 result indicate any problems for running games?
According to the link provided he's running a "4CoreDual-VSTA"
which to me sounds like the asrock board ... http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.as...reDual-VSTA&s=
which i believe is one of zing's fav boards
also according to the link you're running 1GB of ram.
XP64 is only of any benefit when running MORE than 2 gigs of ram. You'll be far better off with a plain boring 32bit os.
I'd suspect most of your problems stem from this as x64 just isnt made for gaming and there are alot of compatibility and driver issues.
The reason the benchmark failed is because you dont have the windows media encoder required to do the test installed.
What games are you trying to play as generally it shouldnt be using your hard drive hardly at all, it should all be stored in the ram.
High performance ram wont help you much with that motherboard as it just wont use it. Instead more of it would do you good.
The via pt880 ultra chipset is based upon the pt880 which was designed for the P4 and not the core 2 duo and it was also designed for ddr ram and an agp graphics.
ddr2, pci-e and core 2 duo support were added on instead of being designed around from the ground up.
Its only saving grace is that its cheap, personally i've never been a fan of via chipsets and the last one i owned was a KT133 (first gen socket a board)

Re: PC Mark 05 result indicate any problems for running games?
Yeah...hmm...so more memory. I thought as much - S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and other modern titles eat up my system memory. For example, the other day, when I was running S.T.A.L.K.E.R, I was digging into my system cache (Total of 1.57GB) and the game was running awful.
The memory I'm using is Corsair (667 MHZ effective) (or something of that ilk) value select, and I think I got the 1GB I have now for £28.
There're computer fairs around where I am, so I'll probably go later and get an extra gig.
I'll see if that makes a difference to the performance.
Keith, I'll also re-install windows xp 32 bit.
Thanks for your help guys
---------- Post added at 04:36 ---------- Previous post was at 04:11 ----------
Oh, just one question - does the memory I get have to be the same brand? I'd be getting the same speed & size as my previous one.

I like these boards when having to build on a budget. I would never use Asrock in higher specced machines. In my experience they do offer a fair no bells or whistles solution for a part upgrade to a new backbone. If someone wanted a flying machine I would look elsewhere.
Unless you have upgraded recently my mainboard is the same as yours
Mr Ping a lot you have 3 threads open now all basically about the same topic

Kids eh.
My Asrock board
http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.as...AM2NF3-VSTA&s=
is perfectly fine... nf3 250 on X2 is a bit weird, though. Well, it works, and it's AGP.
