Little tweak for Vista
Ok its not so much as a tweak but a hidden setting that some may not have found.
By default Vista runs down any and all unaccessed hard drives. This can make performance a bit laggy while they spin up again. I hear clicks and a physical run down of the drive when this happens then if I click a short cut to the drive it makes another click spins up and generally just freezes the system down while the drive spins up again. I find this this really annoying .Its not enviromental but I prefer it off.
Right click desktop select personalize /screensaver/change power settings/click change the plan you have in use.Click change advanced settings browse to Turn off hard disk after and change this to never. This has greatly improved my performance as I do have a fair few hdds in my machine. Hope this helps someone

Re: Little tweak for Vista
Run SETI don't leave your PC idle its criminal
Yeh disk spindown is silly it'll just introduce a greater chance of a hard disk failure happening due to increased spin down/up cycling.
Know how to completely kill the firewall or run something like VNC in system mode ? Its another annoying feature of Vista.
Woo Hoo m$oft has now implemented user/system modes BUT how the heck can I get something like VNC to run at boot time without all this faffing around ?

Distributed/grid computing. We use spare cpu cycles for mathematical computation to help research projects.
boinc is a manager which you can download - then you choose a project to attach to :
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php
of which SETI is one such project.
Popular projects these days are SETI and " folding " (not a boinc project but works the same)
http://folding.stanford.edu/ you can even run it on a PS3

Re: Little tweak for Vista
One of the most annoying thing I have found with vista is the double questioning on so many everyday tasks...
...are you sure you want to do this... are you really sure... oh come on I bet you don't want to do that really...
um... yes I do that's why I clicked it!
Well I have just found out how to disable it, just go to Control Panel type in the search box UAC (User Access Control) click the search result then click the option to disable it.

Re: Little tweak for Vista
What most people don't understand with SETI is that it increases your PC's power usage when its running How? Well, its using 100% cpu usage all the time isnt it? Running at 100% cpu uses more electricity than running at 0% so you're better off leaving it idle unless you have lots of spare cash around to pay for the extra power. Something to consider.

Not a chance I'm running SETI. I turn my PC off when I'm not using it for a while. Saves electricity and my electricity bill that way.

Re: Little tweak for Vista
mine does just say never as an option must be a difference between Premium and Ultimate maybe?
This has made a massive difference to my pc running as many drives as I do it just responds so much better
