Ac97 codec problem with Vista

Eh oh,
I am running vista ultimate home edition. Its lovely I really like it but, I have NO SOUND. It is very annoying.

I am on an asus8v m/b
1gb ram
ati pro thingy graphics card

my sound is off the mb.

I have installed and tried the codecs from realtek they install but no joy. I have set the computer to sleep then rebooted, no joy. I have installed the vista codecs, no joy. I am now at my witts end and considering going back to XP cos vista is sicking the joy out of my gaming and music experience.

Anyone have any ideas ?

Everything is enabled but vista isn't even finding software for it on its update. It's starting to distress me now.

Re: Ac97 codec problem with Vista

goto control panel and click classic view. Then click system ,hardware then device manager and see if there are any drivers missing. (yellow triangle) if not close back to control panel and click sounds and audio devices audio and then audio make sure device is present there. If all present there check cables etc and make sure its not been muted

There isnt a Vista driver on the Asus site for that board but im guessing there is a generic driver as part of windows do as I asked above and if no joy perhaps run windows update to see if there is a driver there if not we will investigate further.I got an old soundblaster 5.1 with little value which would just plug in and work I imagine

(please note directions have been pulled from my head as im in bed on my xp laptop but there will be nearly right but expect some slight differences to what ive said)

Eh oh Zingle

Thanks for your response. I decided eventually like over last weekend to go back to SP2 cos honest there are lots and lots of people getting the same problems as me they can't get audio installed plus if you do you get a lovely little media audio contoller error and media video controller error. SO I gave up and went back to XP.

Strangely everything is working fine on XP!! But I just wanted you to know I had read your message and you deserve a thank you from me so thank you

Re: Ac97 codec problem with Vista

Hmm, Asus K8V uses AD1980 Soundmax chipset doesn't it?
I used to have that board, but I never actually used the o/b sound because I have an Audigy2 ZS Platinum, I did run Vista UG advisor on it and it didn't show anything but then I did have the AC97 off in Bios.

I'll look.
