Re: Stupid CPU/Mobo question!

I went from a K6-2 300 to my Athlon GHz lol (Still using that 'powerhouse' to this day...!).

Anyway if PC2700 is supposed to run at 266, i'm assuming i should just set my FSB to 133, then set my DRAM timing to HCLK... which i think i've done before, and again, it just refuses to load Windows :/

lol, yeah there where a lot. Was it switch based jumpers or propper manual jumpers? I also switched from a cyrix to a K6-2, though I made a slightly smaller leap. I went from a Cyrix MII 266 (OC to 333) to a K6-2 400 (OC to 450). Still was a noticable jump aswel switched from PC66 RAM (Wich was also OC to PC 80) to PC100 RAM. That machine flew

As to the the OPs original question, I have a system doing a similar thing at the moment. It wont run any chip with a 333 FSB. It runs ok at 266 but will Blue screen, freeze or just plain refuse to boot if its turned upto anything above 266. Regardless of what chip runs on this board now even at 266MHZ FSB anything very CPU intensive such as a p2p client (Specificly Bittorrent more than others for some reason) can cause the system to hang. Switching the motherboard cured this 100% but I dont have a board I can permanently switch to so it has to stay on the old one until I get some spare cash. Though this is a completeley different board (Its an MSI Nforce 2 IGP) I believe it might be the same problem. Wich would imply the mobo is your problem. Dont suppose you could lend one to have a try with?

As I pointed out a little earlier CrC-3rr0r was mistaken. PC2700 should be DDR 333Mhz (Or SDR 166Mhz), PC2100 is DDR 266Mhz (Or SDR 133Mhz).
Wich would mean your board was detecting your memory fine, its just struggling with the CPU. Wich could mean the CPU is at fault like zing thinksor the board is at fault like I think.

By the way I have just realised I used to have that very board. My RAID controller stopped working so I sold mine for about £5. (And yes i did tell the person I sold it to the problem )
Was a good board, just had some serious RAM compatibility issues.

Re: Stupid CPU/Mobo question!

Hmmmmm ive spotted a few CPU/Mobo combos being sold on ebay... kinda tempted to try one of those.. although this whole episode has really put me off of getting 2nd hand equipment lol!

EDIT: Actually i could just bin it all, and go with CrC-3rr0r's suggestion here!

Re: Stupid CPU/Mobo question!

Update time!

A very kind soul here on the forums (johnnyposs) sent me a 2800+ and i've just tried to install it.

To start with, i just took out my old chip + HSF and stuck in the new 2800 to see if i could boot with it. It powered up, then powered down after literally 2 seconds. So i spent ages checking that everything was plugged in correctly, also tried reseting the BIOS.. but it made no difference.

So then i did some googling and someone suggested that it would either be: a faulty PSU (got a brand new one, so it's not that), faulty mobo (hope not!) OR it was a faulty/crappy Heatsink and/or fan.

After reading that, i decided to put the heatsink and fan back on.... and it actually stayed powered on... but didn't actually boot or display anything on the screen.

So right now, i've put the old 2200+ back in and left it at that.

Do you think it might be worth getting a new HSF to try on the 2800, or should i just give up now lol?

Any suggestions for a good HSF would be appreciated also (no more than £20 preferably).

[oh, and according to this that processor won't work, even with the latest BIOS... but i've read that people are running them with no problems?!)

You have probably killed the cpu by powering it up without the HSF. Allthough most Modern BIOS's are designed to protect against this there is little any of them can do for the rapid build up of heat you get when you do this. Even powering up an Athlon CPU with the heatsink placed on top but with out the clips can completeley kill a cpu in seconds.

Just updated the BIOS, might try tweaking it some more later
