SATA DVD Drive

A mate of mine asked me to fit a new DVD writer he's just bought for his computer, I called round to throw it in for him but was suprised to see that the motherboard didnt support IDE, there was support for a floppy drive though.

you'd think the manafacturer would have left the option for IDE and not floppy.

Re: SATA DVD Drive

it's a fairly new dual core system from pcworld (says it all really )... he's taking the dvd writer back and getting a sata instead from micro direct, they're fairly cheap £25, apart from the plextor drive £73.

I just belled him, it's a hp compaq pressario model 2029. What gets me is as far as i remember there was no front slot in the case for a floppy drive yet there's a controller for one on the board. maddness!

Re: SATA DVD Drive

Ive found it and its given me a headache. I stand corrected and it is the first board of its type ive seen
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...=36743&lang=en its a custom asus jobbie based on a bloody good board

Id bung an ide raid card at it wouldnt cost much I would need plenty of time tested reliable dvd rws rather than risk a sata one at this time. BTW there is a firmware update for the drive thats in it on the pcworld (spit spit) site

Re: SATA DVD Drive

ffs, does that really have a SATA optical drive? What is the point, the drive mechanics are going to be slower than the SATA interface - and indeed most HDDs have this limitation.
