Recommend a VPN client

Quick question...

My wife is trying to get VPN access sorted to work from home. While the company has given her the VPN server details, trying to get some VPN client software out of them seems to be like trying to get blood out of a stone.

Can anyone recommend a generic VPN client we can try?

Why not just try the Windows Built-In Method?

VPN is a standard networking facility in windows. Simply create a new connection in windows network connections and select the connect to a network at my workplace option.

Of course you then need to know what you are trying to do with the VPN, once it's running.

It depends on what type of VPN it is - Windows suppports some out of the box but not all of them. Do you know exactly what type it is?

Nope - and that's half the problem.

I'm trying the Windows approach now - I thought there was one in Windows somewhere but couldn't find it.

I hadn't realised how simple my employer makes this!

Open control panel, got to network connections. In there either click File - new connection or click to the top left hand corner if you have the side bar enabled.

Create a new connection and on the second page you get the option to connect to your workplace. if it is a windows vpn setup, you can authenticate and gain access.

If you have a diferent type of vpn setup such as an ssl-vpn, then you either need the client software from your admin or the url to access it through https.

Just a quick thanks to those that responded. The MS connection works just fine - the missus is happy now

. The problems were further compounded by the wrong server name and the wrong password but we got there in the end.

This might help you as well.
Double click on your Vpn connection and on the login screen select properties.
Then click the networking tab.
Make sure Internet Protocal (TCP/IP) is highlighted the click properties.
Click Advanced.
Remove the tick from ' Use default gateway on remote network'

This will stop your internet traffic going through the work server and should speed internet access while your connected.
