Driver updates via internet
Hi all, this might be a daft question but why is it that after a clean install of XP, some versions offer you the option of updating drivers from the internet and some just ask you for a location from hdd or disk ?? Is there a way to force this option, why I ask is that I'm trying to get a lappy working ( for a friend ) he has no disks and I can't for the life of me find the right chipset drivers etc etc.
It's a Dell inspiron 9400
Any thoughts ??

Re: Driver updates via internet
I think that when it says update drivers from the internet, what it actually means is update drivers from Windows Update. If the drivers aren't there (which any that haven't been certified by WHQL won't be) then it won't offer to update them from the internet.

Yes I believe this is the case. Newer drivers are normally found on manufacturers web site anyway
to force it goto control panel /system/ hardware/ windows update and tick ask me to search windows update everytime I attach a device (sp2 of course)

Re: Driver updates via internet
Which driver?
I'd download all the latest sound, graphics, network etc drivers and just install the lot anyway.

Re: Driver updates via internet
Thanks for all the tips, it does ( as mentioned ) seem to be available as an option when you install SP2, I'll check the other links now, thanks again.

Re: Driver updates via internet
Might as well download them all and burn them to disk, at least then there will be an accessible set of drivers if it ever needs doing again.... especially if the network drivers don't install straight away lol
