Disk errors in event log

I keep getting errors in the event log about my 200GB storage disk on my server. Could it mean its on its way out?

It keeps saying its a "controller error", which is the most common error and occurs up to 15 times in a row or "device disappeared from system before being prepared for removal", then the disk is gone from my computer and disk management until I reboot.

Re: Disk errors in event log

Damn it. Its not even a year old I don't think. I think Ill be going back to the good old reliable 80gb drives I keep getting.

Ive noticed it only seems to do it when the drive is spun down by windows, which it does after 3 minutes if not used. Odd...

And I don't think I'd ever trust it again - it doesn't matter if it's 11 days 'till the warranty runs out. Get hold of some drive diagnostics from your drive maker and do a thorough check.

I got those errors some time ago, I emptied the prefetch folder, and the symptoms disappeared.

You might be able to test it using Speedfan also, if it's supported.

Re: Disk errors in event log

I used to use speedfan until I reinstalled the OS today... Ive only noticed it happening today as well. But like I said, its not happened again since I changed it to master on the IDE.

My dad and myself will soon be building a storage server with RAID anyway so it wont be much of a problem soon.

No this is running on 256MB RAM The one with 64MB is unused in the cupboard. Its only brought out for use with out scanner which uses an ISA card Its only a 166MHz processor too so it runs XP well for what it is

Re: Disk errors in event log

Run manufacturer's diags - eg PowerMax for Maxtors or Seatools for Seagates - ASAP. Sounds like the drive's dying.

Re: Disk errors in event log

Open up your computer and check that the cables are securely pushed into their sockets.

I had lots of these errors in my error logs and thought that the drive was on its way out - when I opened the computer up I found that the IDE cable wasn't fully pushed home, and when I pushed it in, bingo, the errors went away. I had run diagnostics on the drives and they found nothing abnormal.

Re: Disk errors in event log

Since changing the drive to master its not caused any errors at all. I guess it was just the cable *sigh of relief*
