Dual Booting
Hi All,
I currently have Xp on my machine and i want to install windows 2000 as well, but keep both OS's from interfering with each other. I belive thats where a dual boot option come into its own.
I currently only have 7 gig on my C:\ Drive but have 24 gig free on my E:\ drive, so i was thinking of creating another partition on my E:\ Drive of about 10 gig (so that becomes f:\ for example) and installing 2000 on that.
I assume im right in my assumption this can be done - but at what point during install do i tell windows to install to F:\ instead of c:\ and have it recognise that i already have XP installed?
And can it use the same programs in my Program files directory or will it get confused?
Or am i way off here?

Re: Dual Booting
I think that the prevailing advice is to install the most recent operating system last.
In this case you would need to install 200 first and then XP.
I'm sure that it can be done the other way round though, I've never tried it myself but I'm sure someone here has

Oh, and IIRC you need to install each program that you wish to use on both partitions.
Your 2k OS will not be able to use programs installed on the XP partition (or vice versa).

Why would that be an issue though as you should be able to select which OS to boot?

Re: Dual Booting
Not sure. I know I've read it somewhere though, and certainly the Microsoft articles that I've seen all tend to suggest the same thing.
It might be something to do with the fact that dual-boot support is somehow better in later versions, I'm guessing here though
It might not be an issue at all, like I say - that's what I read

As we are talking about windows 2000 & xp this is no longer an issue as you will be able to select the os from a list. It would be an issue if we were talking about windows 98 & xp as the bootup of these two versions differ.

Some programs might run if they don't rely on certain system files or registry entries but you will only find out by running the exe itself. I'm running Windows Server 2003 and not so long ago the call of duty add-on pack would not install under 2003 so I booted into xp and installed from there, booted back into 2003 and ran it and it worked fine If your not worried about losing any settings it might be worthwhile just repeating the install of the applications in 2000, sure it would overwrite the files but they should be the same, the only thing it will do is install the relevant system files as well as add entries to the registry in windows 2000....go on, you know you want to
Also, why the need for windows 2000?

Re: Dual Booting
Not the file system (although that can be problematic), it was the fact that the boot system of the earlier OS's is different to that of the newer ones (as iron25 said above ^^).

Re: Dual Booting
Xp that exists will hold the prevailing boot ini, I believe that even if installing 2000 didnt write to this (which I believe it should) you can edit the ini yourself anyway
Reinstall apps but games and the like will run from either o/s just may need to copy save games
