Windows XP Hibernation problem
Ok heres the story, wanted to go down to my local town, so i decided instead of shutting the PC down i would put Windows XP into Hibernation mode. Anyway came back to switch it on again, gets to the Welcome screen with all the usernames, i click on mine and it asks for my passowrd which is in lowercase, go to type it in only to find that i have to have caps lock turned on to get back to my desktop.
Second of all, just came to the site and discovered that when i clicked on a forum area it highlighted the whole board. This also happens with in Windows whenever i open control panel and any other system folder or my own.
Im assuming that this also happens on the other two accounts on here, but i cant get into them as they are password protected.
Is this a bug Microsoft still havent worked out or what? Running Windows XP Home Edition with all updates applied and SP's.

Re: Windows XP Hibernation problem
Sounds like you have "Sticky keys" turned on, and it's sticking the shift key. Try pushing one of the shift keys. If that doesn't cure it, go to "Control Panel", "Accessibility options" then clear the tick on "Sticky Keys".
BTW, in case you didn't know, Sticky Keys is a function that changes how the Shift, Alt, Ctrl and Windows keys work. You normally have to hold these keys down, while pushing another. Sticky keys changes them to work in the same way the "Caps Lock" key does (push for on, then push to switch off).

Try pushing the shift key anyway.

Re: Windows XP Hibernation problem
Do you use a wireless keyboard?
If so the batteries might need changing!

Re: Windows XP Hibernation problem
If it's a bug in the software it would affect a lot more people than just you Wayne, to me it sounds like a problem with the install, maybe even a couple of registry keys are corrupted. I know you can tweak a registry key to make the Num lock stay on when you go to the login screen, maybe something is telling Windows that the caps or shift is pressed. I take it you have ruled out a faulty keyboard.
The selection of everything when you click the mouse is another indicator that the shift key status is not reporting correctly to windows, have you tried removing the keyboard from your hardware profile, reboot and let it reinstall?

Re: Windows XP Hibernation problem
Probably the easy way would be to change your password to uppercase.

Re: Windows XP Hibernation problem
Wayne, have a you a spare keyboard to try? It might be that the shift key isn't always releasing properly or it may no be reporting its' state properly. If you get the same results with a different keyboard I would sugest a clean install...... or not using hibernation

Is the HD still active while you are logging in/ experiencing the problem? If so it may just be Windows trying to catch up with all the data it is loading off the hard drive.
