MS turns on WGA

El Reg
Quote:
Microsoft is no longer providing updates to non-genuine versions of its Windows XP operating system. From today, the company has switched over to a full launch of its Windows Genuine Advantage Programme as part of its ongoing anti-piracy campaign.
Users will now have to join the WGA authentication program if they want to receive software updates from the Microsoft Download Centre or from Windows Update. However, MS says it will still provide security patches for pirated systems, which will be available via Automatic Updates in Windows.
To register for the WGA, users just need to visit the Microsoft Download Centre, Windows Update or Microsoft Update. There they will be prompted to download an ActiveX control that checks the authenticity of their Windows software and, if Windows is validated, stores a download key on the PC for future verification.

Ok, they will or they won't! I respect their reasons for still giving security updates to pirated copies...better have them all security tight than not...

But what is the difference between the support levels? Pirated only get security and authentics get what?

Without WGA you have to use Automatic updating and therefor only receive what is available through AU.

Automatic Updates helps you keep your Windows installation current with the latest critical and security updates. Using Automatic Updates does not require validation.

I think Microsoft have to support even pirated versions of their OS's to help prevent flaws being exploited that might affect legitimate users in some way, e.g. Code Red/Nimda port scanning licensed remote machines and maxing out their router/firewall connections.

Re: MS turns on WGA

er... what's the difference?

I have always used automatic updates & I see no reason not to.

I log on to my PC, get a little icon that says I have updates & then install them.

Is this to no longer work for me then?
I have both legitimate at work & not so much at home being used.

Post 3, you'll be able to get automatic updates but nothing else on the machine that isn't validated.

Exactly, when you purchase a copy of windows you are actually purchasing a license that allows you to use Windows on 1 PC. (Newer versions of Office allow you to install and run on 1 PC and a laptop/ other PC.) If you wish to run Windows on more than one PC you need to buy a further license.
