Re: Exploding Cd!!!!!!
You're just lucky you didn't get any bits of flying plastic in your eye.
I've never seen an exploding cd before - but I have seen the inside of a deathstar after a 'failure' which was a mess.

Re: Exploding Cd!!!!!!
That can happen if the CD is unbalanced by putting too much weight on one side of it (sticker).

No sticker on it and it was actually a genuine paid for game.

Re: Exploding Cd!!!!!!
Had a 100x cd rom drive once (dont know why they are not available anymore)
Put a disc in but then decided to eject it. I did not realise it was still spinning and as soon as I touched it it went crazy and span off

Re: Exploding Cd!!!!!!
I found regularly used CD's et stress fractures starting to appear in the middle of the disc, eventually these will shatter.

Not me personally, but a friend has.
This is a known problem because companies are trying to a) increase speed of reading CDs and b) bring down the cost of producing them, thus using cheaper (and sometimes thinner) materials.
The problem is that the two goals are, to some point, mutually incompatible with the risk that a flawed or weakened CD can simply shatter under the stresses involved.
Of course that doesn't make it any better if it happens to you...!

Re: Exploding Cd!!!!!!
it happens because of cheap cd/dvd cases that don't correctly sit the disk in them unless you apply too much pressure. This causes tiny fractures that are barely visible and can shatter when your drive reaches full speed.
It's happened to me on two occasions now
