Problem accessing online banking details

Hi guys, hopefully someone could help me here.

Ive just purchased a new computer Windows XP, etc and have just tried to access my bank account online.

Obviously these websites are (supposed to be) hyper-secure. Problem is I cant gain access to it when I input my Bank Number and Password!!

When I try to access this an "Error on Page" dialog box pops up. This states as follows (edited in some places):

Quote:
Line: 938
Char: 1
Error: Object doesn't support this property or method.
Code: 0
URL: [(Edited) Website address for bank]
Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing the problem?? I suspect that it has something to do with the Java controls?? But thats just me!!

All help is appreciated!!

James

Re: Problem accessing online banking details

I'd initially suspect Java, since M$ were forced to stop providing it as part of Windoze. Have a look in control panel there should be a Java icon in there if you have Sun's version of Java loaded.

Downloads available here.

Re: Problem accessing online banking details

Tried as you recommended Rob. Went into Control Panel, I could see that there was indeed the Java Icon. I remember though that I received a warning a week or so ago that the installed version was out of date.

So, I installed the new version so that it would be current. Having done this, I have again tried to access my Bank account - with no success.

This time no error message pops up and no small icon appears at the bottom left hand corner of the browser.

Now Im totally baffled!!?? Perhaps the banks system is substandard and cannot function with the new versions of Java. It used to work on my old Windows 98 system with the "built in" Java!!!

Anybody have any other ideas??

Re: Problem accessing online banking details

Internet Explorer Security settings perhaps?. I wonder if the site is trying to send you something that is blocked. Maybe try letting the site be a trusted zone?

Re: Problem accessing online banking details

Thanks again Rob for the advice. I tried again as you said, still to no avail!! Very strange!! Maybe I'll just decide to stop using online banking!! (I just use it to check my balance!!)

Although, it was handy - didn't have to go to the bank machine to check the dreaded balance (I was able to have a heart attack at home with online banking!!).

Which bank is it? Maybe their site is having problems?

Re: Problem accessing online banking details

Dont think it's having problems. It's a regional bank in Northern Ireland called the Ulster Bank.

Re: Problem accessing online banking details

Very strange. I just googled for your bank and got to this.

I use Firefox & sometimes it won't link to some sites but this one seems ok for me.

Would it be worth you trying that link & signing on from there if possible?

Re: Problem accessing online banking details

Could a proxy be blocking access? Try changing any see if that has any effect.

Seems odd though if you could access before you got your new PC, implies that it is somethign about your PC's setup.

Presumably you have the basics like cookies enabled.

Re: Problem accessing online banking details

Angua, you're a star!!! Just went in via the main webpage and it checked the Java version, made me download a certificate and I was able to re-establish a connection with the bank (online).

Now, thank heavens it's payday next week!!
