autofill passwords etc

On many sites there is an option at sign in for "the system" to remember the user name and password so that it will auto-fill with just a click when you next try access. In some sites you may have 2 or even more log-in names and passwords.

Is there a standard folder / place where these are kept on your machine or are such details kept on the site you try to access? I ask because due to personal ineptidue I have made a spelling mistake on a user name and I keep forgetting and trying to auto-fill with that name. I would like to edit out the name to avoid the problem. Entering a new user name does not delete the old user name.

Thanks

Re: autofill passwords etc

Password information is normally stored on the user pc within cookies that the site uses. Look in your temporary internet folder/ cache for the relevant cookie. Normally if you input incorrectly and the site queries the password you then correct the password and the information is stored on the cookie so that it is correct in future.

Re: autofill passwords etc

Depends on the site and the browser.

Sites like this with a 'remember me' button use a browser cookie. In that case deleting all you cookies (or just the one for that site, if you can find it) should help.

If it's the FF autofill feature, you under 'Options', 'Privacy' you can reset all saved passwords or view the details and delete one.

If it's not FF, let us know what browser.

Re: autofill passwords etc

In IE it's Tools, Internet Options and then click the button marked "settings" in the Temporary Internet Files area and then click the "view files" button.

Re: autofill passwords etc

or navigate directly through Explorer... C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Cookies

Doing this, if you've got an Admin account, you can also look at the cookies of anyone else using that PC, by looking in their Cookies folder, and can then determine what sites they've been looking at goat...wtf?!?

Re: autofill passwords etc

Sorry I did not respond earlier - family illness problems. I cleared all cookes and temp internet files from IE6 ....... and the website STILL has the wrong name when I click on the "name" box. However, grandmaster's technique worked fine.

Many thanks
