Flaws in Unix?

Students at the University of Illinois have found 44 flaws in Unix applications (don't know what flavour). However, as they were asked by their tutor to find 10 EACH, most will probably fail the course.

Stiil, it does prove what I have always said: No operating system is 100% secure.

Details of the flaws are at http://tigger.uic.edu/~jlongs2/holes/

Re: Flaws in Unix?

Yep, if an OS was ever 100% secure, then they'd be no need for patches. It's more a question of which OS is more secure and suited for your needs.

Very true, however the article refers to Unix applications not the Operating System itself.

Re: Flaws in Unix?

In the early days of unix, one of the problems was that a lot of apps have to run with high level permissions, and some of the more helpful apps allowed you to shell out of the app - and often people would find themselves with root perms...

True. However a lot of the security problems with Windows are nothing to do with the Core OS, just faults in the supplied applications..

However, no System (OS or Application) is perfect..
