MP3 folder file names
Hi all
I have about 7500 mp3 on my pc and they are in a bit of a mess !
Some are under Artist folders .....ones imported by Itunes. Other are in one great big file under just track name etc.
What I would like to do is bring them all together under C My music and in sperate artist folders. Is there a way of doing this automatically if not it's going to take me weeks !
Any ideas welcome
Thanks

Re: MP3 folder file names
I doubt it. Even if you could write a batch file, I reckon it would be complicated and might be easier to do it manually.

Re: MP3 folder file names
JUst put them all in one folder and get ITunes to list them how you want.
It doesnt really matter where they are stored.

Re: MP3 folder file names
Unless the MP3s have the correct details in their tags, I can't think of any way of doing this other than taking a week off work and manually renaming them. If they do, then you could write a utility that would go through all the files, look-up the ID tag and then rename the file using that value.
How good are your programming skills?

...actually, after Googling this idea, it looks like someone else has already written such an app

Do they all have the correct tags?

Re: MP3 folder file names
I think if you moved them all to a temp music folder then told itunes to import them into it's default folder (which you choose as My Music).
It should use the metadata to file it properly - assuming the metadata is good.

Re: MP3 folder file names
iTunes for Mac has a 'consolidate music library' menu option (can't remember which menu it's under tho) which brings all your mp3s together in one place. From what I've seen, the PC version is pretty much identical, so that option must be there somewhere.
If the mp3s are already visible in iTunes, make sure the track, artist and album names are all entered properly before you begin. Then, when iTunes moves the files, it will create appropriately named folders and subfolders to store everything.

It should be under "Advanced", "Consolidate Library".

Many thanks for this...............it did exactly what I wanted it to. Took some time but all my music is now listed correctly. All under my music and folders have been created by Artist name.
Thanks again
Regards
Mike

np Mike. It will have taken a while as iTunes should have actually moved all the files to their new location from wherever it found them.
You should also find further folders inside the Artist folders with album names.
