I have ntl broadband through a stb to my computer, and im sharing it to my other computer through ICS. i would like to share it to another computer and get rid of the ics using a wireless network, im running windows xp pro on all three systems is there anything that may get in my way, or anything i could plan in advanced that i may need after i hav installed the hardware?, im getting a linksys wireless router with 3 wireless pci cards
Thanks in advanced

Should be fine. Linksys routers are very easy to set-up.
As you use an STB, rather than a standalone modem, you'll need to either a) clone the MAC address, of the PC currently connected to the STB, onto the router's WAN port, -or- b) go through this again with one of the PCs once it's all set-up. Either option is easy.
There's also a thread with wireless networking info here: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ad.php?t=16296
And, a very important thing to do when you set-up a wireless network is make sure you have security. Info on that is here: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/article.php?a=12

nope , just remember that ntl dont support any form of home networking , if you have problems then they will not want to know

Nope. ntl's User Policy specifically allows the use of routers. No need to tell/ask them anything. [although if you have a problem with the router itself, rather than your connection, ntl are unlikely to give you any help for it, as it is not their problem. ]

Re: Wireless Network
wow this forum is very lively
i didnt know ntl didnt like networking...
when my broadband was set up i never recieved any details for the password and the username to register the mac, the installation man did it for me. so would i need these? i suppose i can always call them and ask for them. they wouldnt need to know im networking would they? or is that not advisable?
so if they dont support networking is it ok to come on here and get support from you guys?

They don't support it. Some techs may give help for networking etc when you ring up, but they don't have to help (& may not be able to help anyway). The only support you're supposed to get is for the connection itself - PC problems, networking problems, etc....not their responsibility.

You should have had a welcome letter with all the details. You could phone them & ask for the details again (e.g. you could say you just wanted to connect a different PC). Easier thing though, is to just clone the MAC address onto the router (that way the STB thinks it's still connected to the same PC). Very easy to do with Linksys routers. There's a very simple manual method, or the "wizard" on the set-up CD can do it for you I believe.

Given that this is a continuation of the thread you started the other day, I think it's better to merge this.

Plug the PC the engineer set your connection up with into port one of the router and the STB in to the WAN port. Turn everything off. Turn on the STB and let it boot up, then the router, then the PC.
Log onto the admin page of the router (its address is in the book)
Find the option to clone your MAC address, it should find the PCs address and put it in the box as the one to clone.
Save, Power cycle the lot and you should be set. Plug the other two PCs into it in the same way and they will be connected.
All the connections need to be ethernet, if you do not have an ethernet card in the PC you may be a little stuffed untill you buy one.
