Question very low sound!

just been given a second comp running wix xp with sp2, the problem is with all the volume controls turned as high as they go i can only just hear the sound and that's with my ear right next to the speakers! I've turned up every volume control i can find the ones in propities, the main volume control and the one in device manager! I've updated the drivers for the sound, i have also put in a spare hard drive with windows me installed and still there is very low sound, any ideas?

Re: very low sound!

Could be a dodgy connection. Check speaker cables are all wired properly and plugged into the corerct jacks.

Re: very low sound!

Have you tried turning up the sound in the toolbar sound controls?

Re: very low sound!

some sound cards have a line out (unamplified) jack as well as a speaker out (amplified) jack - are you using the line out with unamplified speakers, by any chance?

Re: very low sound!

Not much help this I know, but I have the exact oposite problem.

I have to have all the Windows volume controls set to about 10%, and then adjust the overall volume with the "Master Volume" control.
If any of the individual controls are more than about 10% then the sound is very loud & distorted.

Recording is even worse, have to have it set to about 2%.

I'm pretty sure it's my motherboard, tried different speakers & mics, both powered & passive. Motherboard driver/bios updates don't fix it! And yes, it's all plugged in the right sockets
Was the same on Windows 2000 & now XP Pro

Re: very low sound!

If your speakers are anything to shout about, put an amplifier in between them and the sound card.
