Files deleted on a network share...
My friend has a network of a laptop and desktop. He was on the 98se desktop tonight connected to his XP home laptop on a network share to his documents on the laptop and deleted some files by mistake. How do you recover files from a network share?

Re: Files deleted on a network share...
Not unless you have a backup - Recycle Bin doesn't work for network drives. Other options include costly data recovery companies.

I don't think you do, not without specialist software - they don't go into the recycle bin.

OK. Thanks. It was only Music copied from CDs so he will just have to copy it back on. He said he cannot be bothered because of how long it takes. Well it serves him right and it will teach him not be a lazy @r$e. LOL.
Thanks again I didnt think you could recover it without specialist software.

Why is there no such thing as the network recycle bin?
Surely MS would have thought of that idea by now?

Re: Files deleted on a network share...
At the very least they could do it the way OS X handles it. When you delete a file from a network share it warns you that the file will be deleted immediately and asks if you want to continue.

Because there is no way to be sure you would have rights to move the file to a bin on the machine you are sharing. Moving it to your bin is a no no, what if the file is several GB !!.

Re: Files deleted on a network share...
I think some of the very latest M$ server type software has now got a limited recyle bin type facility for files stored on servers. Certainly SMall Buisiness Server 2003, which using the Windows Server platform includes this. Long overdue in my book.

Re: Files deleted on a network share...
Volume Shadow Copy Service in MS Server 2003.. is the puppy as it automates the process of storing old files etc on a network.
All windows networks ask for confirmation on deleting a file on a network share, saying 'Click OK to delete poo.tmp'
If the file is eligable for going inot the recycle bin it prompts before putting it there 'Are you sure you want to send poo.tmp to the recycle bin'
I think this is difference enough to show a user when its deleted and when its not...
Sticks tongue out at MAC users

Rights management would be a nightmare, basically each person would have to have their own recycle bin on the server, otherwise it becomes a shared folder with shared viewing.
Imagine taking a nose around it and finding the head of payroll has a deleted copy of bonuses.xls in the recycle bin, or your boss has deleted the folder performance appraisals from his personal network file store.

It does though...
File being deleted from a network share:
File being deleted locally.
No excuse really

Re: Files deleted on a network share...
You'd be surprised how many non-techie users don't spot the difference between the 2 dialog boxes though. The one I posted specifically warns that the file(s) will be deleted immediately.
