Links Problems - Firewall/Browser Setting ???

Hi all,

Been having some problems with Internet Links recently and am not sure whether it is a Browser setting or Firewall Setting Or Flash or Other.

Using IE6 and XP Pro and Kerio Free Version As a Firewall.

I will post some examples below -

Link thats work are

here , here and here

For comparison the ones that dont work examples below -

Links that dont work are

here , here , here and finally post 55 here

Any ideas if this is a browser setting, Flash Setting or Firewall setting.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Links Problems - Firewall/Browser Setting ???

From what i can see, the sites that you cannot access are not full addresses... ie www.address.com instead of www.address.com/index.html

Problem is, in the examples you have given i haven't been able to work out what the full address is. This leads me to believe that it may be a problem with framed forwarding, or some kind of similar method which means that you cannot access the site using the document name at the end of the url. I may be way of the mark with this... but if it is something that you investigate.

When you say that you cannot access the sites, i assume you mean that you get page cannot be displayed?

I seriously doubt that it is a flash issue as this link that you gave as a not working example doesn't use flash at all.

can you access http://home.wanadoo.nl ? if not, trying telnetting this site on port 80... to do so:

start -> run -> telnet
then type "open home.wanadoo.nl 80" (no quotes) [i can't remember if it works this way on XP or has the NT version where you have to chose Connect -> remote on the menus the type host name and port number]
when it shows you a blank window with a cursor type " get /" (it probably won't show when you type)
It should either stream html or flash up and then disconnect...

If you can think of a site where you can test the framed forwarding theory then that might be the easiest place to start. Also try disabling your firewall and then see if you can access the links so that you can rule that out as causing a problem.

Cheers m8.

Should have been a bit more clearer in me original post.

Can load all the sites mentioned but some will play the animation others either black screen or fail or just sit there like something should be happening but the picture for instance remains still.

Tried the link you posted and can get the nescafe jiggly picture.

One other thing i should have added is it also affects sound sometimes get the links working but with no sound yet other links work perfect.

I am not on an NTL connection but a Pipex ADSL connection which was another thing i forgot to add.

Used to use Zone Alarm prior to a reformatt and now use Kerio Firewall and never had any such problems that could not be tweaked before.

I have tried opening links in new windows copy and pasting the links and trying later all to no avail and am still trying to work out whether it could be a firewall setting or browser setting etc etc.

Thanks again m8 my quest will continue.

Re: Links Problems - Firewall/Browser Setting ???

Not sure if this is relevant, but is your copy of IE 6 fully patched? I've been having problems since I installed the last patch - images just stop displaying or display corrupted. It seems to be big images - small ones are fine. It just happens without warning. A reboot of the PC fixes it. The patch is the only thing I can think of

Re: Links Problems - Firewall/Browser Setting ???

try setting your firewall levels to medium, also in internet explorer go to the 'security' tab in 'internet options' and select 'default level' 'apply' then 'ok' restart browser, reboot machine and try.

Well, from what i can see after peering into the advanced internet options in IE6 there doesn't seem to be anything there that would affect playing flash. I had a look in mine and have all of the options in the multimedia section selected- this is the best place to look for any settings that might affect it.

The other thing i can think of is have you been playing around with hijack this?

I see an entry in my log:

O16 - DPF: {D27CDB6E-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000} (Shockwave Flash Object) - http://download.macromedia.com/pub/s...sh/swflash.cab

it is a long shot, but if you have deleted this then it might be stopping flash plugins from working properly... it might be worth reinstalling flash from the macromedia site and see if this makes any difference.

have you got a different browser that you can try?

I will have a look at the sites in a little bit more detail and scratch my head a bit more... i do like a challenge

Oh and i can tell that you are not on an ntl connection... if you were an ntl customer then you would be blaming ntl straight away

Re: Links Problems - Firewall/Browser Setting ???

To bring an old thread back to life.

Still getting problems.

Have tried all of the above etc.

Using a Pipex ADSL connection, XP Pro with SP2, IE6 Fully up to date, Kerio Personal Firewall and Nortons AV.

Some examples below of links that do not work.

Examples - this link found here

The page will load with a Windows SP2 Firewall Icon in the browser and I turn that off and retry and again the page will load with an IE Cookie warning in the browser and then I reset the cookies settings to low and reload and again the page loads the blokey taps his foot and thats it no sound no continuation.

Another example is found here

Page loads fine click on play and nothing.

I have reinstalled Flash etc and still nothing.

I am inclined to believe it must an IE setting that is set too high somewhere as Kerio is set to ask for most rules and other than being set to block pop up and pop under windows which can be overridden by pressing the ctrl key the firewall never prompts me.

As you can see from the original date of this thread it is not a problem with SP2 as it was happening on and off with certain links before then.

Any ideas much appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Links Problems - Firewall/Browser Setting ???

Do you have another browser that you could try....? this would give a definate answer as to whether it is a browser issue, or something else

Cheers mb.

Update -

Have now downloaded and tried mozilla on the links mentioned.

First of all it told me a required plug in was needed so re downloaded flash.

Even with Kerio and the Windows Firewall off and even went to the extreme of turning Nortons AV off still the same.
