Usually eth0 is set by default to start at boot up which is fine for a static ip address or network address but not good for ntl connections unless your on business ntl and have static ip address or you manually point it to your network address.
eth0 has to have this or be able to configure itself using ntls method or dhcp.
You could try running ifup eth0
Then ifdown eth0 to drop.
